Worst management ever + sleepless nights due to trucks in the alley

Living in this building made me feel as though I lived in a prison. The amount of cameras in the space is comforting until the building sends second by second screen shots of camera footage of yourself to your inbox. Secondly, there are signs everywhere! They are not pleasant signs, but rather corrective action signs - do this, don’t do this, potential fines in bold face font. I counted at least 8 of these signs from the front door to my apartment. Management event posted a sign by the elevator wherein a specific unit number was mentioned and essentially shamed a new tenant about elevator usage. The individuals who manage this building have horrible communication skills. They are non-responsive to emails, ignore genuine complaints and are even slower to fix maintenance issues. Consequently, the only way to reach anyone is via email. When you call the office line no one picks up and there is no way to leave a message.

The apartments have 13ft ceilings with hardwood and modern appliances. However, the HVAC system is terribly inefficient and in need of a cleaning as dust was always everywhere. The hot water tank is only 40 gallons. Good luck filling up the deep bathroom tub before the water goes cold. There is only one elevator and not a separate service elevator for moving. There is no doorman. The buzzer only works for the immediate outside front door. If your friends are family come to visit, you must greet them at the front and open the second locked door.

The building is seven stories tall and those surrounding are much taller. The unit was dark except at night when my neighbor’s lights in the building across invade the space. Annoyingly, I was routinely woken up at 3AM due to garage and recycling trucks in the alley. Most weeks there would be up three trucks before 7AM. Every surrounding building has a contract with different waste management companies which means the possibility of loud noise at any hour of the night.

I would not recommend living here.

As a single woman it was very important for me to live in an area that was safe given that the medical school schedule will require me to come home at night. Also it gives me great peace of mind to live in a building with doormen 24/7 in case anything were to happen. However, this has come at at a great cost.
Quite a number of nice bars and restaurants within walking distance. Groceries also (Target, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods about 15 minutes by foot; small local shop about 3 mins). Bus stop to go to the university about 10 mins away (number 2, Hyde Park Express).
I really like South Loop. It is definitely an older crowd (young 30s and up) which suited me better - it has families and schools but still feels close to downtown which I really enjoy. Lots going on close by and lots of grocery stores too.
South Loop is quieter than the Loop, but you will get more space. Ideal for parents, people with partners that work remotely, or people looking for more space for their money. Outside of Bears games, has far fewer tourists to deal with than the Loop.
Across Michigan Ave from Grant Park. 10-minute walk from the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, and Soldier Field.
Roosevelt station is very close by and incredibly convenient if you don't mind taking the train or buses, but it is a transit hub, so expect increased numbers and variety of people.
Not far from the rest of the Loop, and you can still easily make your way north for study groups and social events.
I literally love living in the south loop. I can walk practically anywhere
less of a tourist trap than streeterville, still downtown atmosphere. There's a cozy little neighborhood full of townhouses that's nice for a walk.
Pros: Central to all major forms of transport, proximity to downtown, museums, and activities

Cons: Proximity to all major inbound train tracks increases the noise level. Proximity to Roosevelt Road which is high-traffic, treeless, and not bike-friendly.
It's a fine location. Not great, not horrible. I like a lot of other neighborhoods better but this is closer to school.
