Montrose

Houston's Most Eccentric Neighborhood
Originally imagined as a strictly residential neighborhood, Montrose has morphed into Houston's most eccentric spot with neon-lit tattoo parlors, 24-hour drive-thrus, and covered bungalows. You can get out and enjoy the quirkiness of this neighborhood at popular spots like The Hay Merchant, Stone's Throw, and Biskit Junkie. Renters love the area for being full of top-notch restaurants/bars as well as arts & cultural venues.

Houston isn't known for being one of the most walkable cities in the country, but Montrose is an exception. It's a four-square-mile neighborhood that is home to a young, hip crowd and offers a lot to experience.

Montrose — 8.4/10 Rating (based on 5 neighborhood reviews)
If you are a student at U of H , then the commute is about 15 minutes even in moderate traffic. Public transport isn't great, but that's Houston in general. The area is great for a night out with coffee shops, bars, and restaurants nearby. Specifically, the Pit Room and Patio bar are right next tot he complex and great for a quick night out. For a more tame time, the Menil park and art gallery is a 7 minute walk away. If you need to study, the Montrose Branch of the Houston Public Library system is about 7 minutes away. For shopping, a CVS pharmacy is a 5 minute walk and a great HEB grocery store is about a 5 minute drive away. The area is also very safe. One regularly sees police patrols from the nearby University of St. Thomas and Houston Police station. Overall, a great location for a U of H student.
