Excelent for MQM students

You can study in Belmont Leasing Office. There is a pool for summer and a 24-hour gym. Police always comes around to check the place. Parties allowed. Very close to 2 bus lines (LL and LLCW)

Decent but some caveats

Overall, Belmont apartments are decent. The units are super old, and so are the appliances inside the apartment. There is a cockroach infestation problem, but Belmont does a decent job of bringing an exterminator in when you request it. Location to West campus and affordable rent make it a good value. Also, Belmont is full of other Duke students, so it is super social.

Belmont housing insight

The place is a bit dirty and there are a lot of bugs, so if thats a deal breaker then I would suggest another apartment. However, I love the community aspect and location of the apartment.

Great!

Belmont is a great place to be
Most of my batchmates are right here, so we are super connected
Apartments are a bit old, but very charming
Patrol cars patrol the property through the night, so its very safe.
We have a beautiful lake, and lots of space to walk even at night!!!

Good place to live in and safe

Great place to live in. Feels like a community with the number of Fuqua students living there. Very easy to meet new people and it is also pretty safe. Gated and has cops doing rounds at night.

Great Price

Very affordable price. Quiet experience if you can get a 3rd floor apartment or one that is far away from any lawns (where people like to walk their dogs). Maintenance is quick and easy. LL bus stop is right outside the apartment gate. Sometimes the apartments will randomly fine you for something you didn't do. However, maybe this will be better with the change of ownership. Front office people have been nicer since Hawthorne took over.

Great space, very close to TSCHE

The apartment complex is within 1 mile of TSCHE and on the shuttle route that goes to campus every 20 minutes. The complex itself has some great amenities (small, but nice gym; great pool; wonderful staff). The apartments are a great size for the price, and the only issues are some bugs that are common to most apartments in NC. The complex provides great pest control. Many students live here, so it is a great place to make friends too!

Average apartment, not worth the value, but worst management ever

The management at Belmont is terrible. They are disrespectful and if you allow it, they are going to make you feel that they are doing a favor to you, even though you are paying for their service. They don't solve things, unless you are very energetic. My apartment is not bad, but definitely is an overpriced apartment, specially because of the common areas, the problems that I have (i cannot cook in an airfryer, the heater fails, the garbage disposal gets clogged every two months), and specially because of the security problems (the neighborhood is not nice).

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
