Pretty good for close to campus!

Had some security problems last year, but haven't experienced anything this year. Very responsive management.

Great

I think my rent is lower than many of my friends apartment complexes. The reason why is because these apartments are a little older (appliances, etc.). However, I don't mind. I really like the outdoor spaces we have (a large pond, with a walking trail, etc.). Also can walk to school.

Belmont Experience

My apartment itself is great. I live close to campus, and I love the complex -- nice pool, great lake/trails, grills, picnic tables, gazebos, etc. The leasing office has team meeting rooms and is overall a great convenient place to study. However, the apartment itself has ancient appliances and constantly requires maintenance -- or so it seems like. Maintenance stays super busy. The Belmont management is sub-par and won't go out of their way to help you. Belmont has had issues with security, too. It's a quiet property though, and I have lots of graduate students living around me, too, so it's been overall a good place to live other than the maintenance issues.

Homey apartment with lake

The Belmont is pretty quaint with a really beautiful lake that's a great reprieve. It's very close to campus so you can walk, or the bus stop (both Durham and Duke buses) is right out front. The apartments aren't brand new, but they're fairly nice quality inside and a lot spacier than the brand new apartment buildings (my apartment is >800 sq ft for roughly the same price as a ~400 sq ft apartment). The office is somewhat helpful but can sometimes appear apathetic. There's a lot of security, you get an alarm system and a panic button, and there are patrol cars at night. However, we still had two armed robberies (from the same two robbers) which was really disappointing and scary. It seems that they caught one of the two robbers, and the Belmont increased their security by quite a bit to help.

Its one of the best for what you pay

The facilities are top-notch -- the gym has peloton's, there is always enough parking, and the lake trail is perfect for dog owners or anyone who wants to escape the "city". The apartment themselves are dated, but nothing is broken.

The biggest negative is the road it's located on. There is rampant crime on LaSalle and that bleeds into the Belmont. Since living here we've had three armed robberies. We now have two security patrols and one sheriff who patrols at night. Each apartment comes with a security alarm system and a panic button. As a female who lives alone, the break-ins are very troubling, but as long as you request an apartment closer to the office you should be fine. The majority of the crime happens in the back since it doesn't have good lighting.

I plan to stay here for another year since rent prices have hiked up so much within the last year. It's unfortunate about the crime, but the management team is working on making the complex as safe as possible. Also, the proximity to campus cant be beat.

Expensive for a "meh" apartment

It is nothing special but pretty expensive. The only reason we live here is because we are a one-car household and my fiancée needs the car for work. I am able to walk or take the bus to get to campus. Otherwise I would not want to live here if I had a car.

Less than average. Not quite the “life of luxury” they describe on the website.

Summary:

Pros: spacious, close to Duke, easily accessible busses, free parking, nice-looking leasing office, sometimes fairly quick turnaround time with maintenance, laundry in-unit.

Cons: Bugs, new property manager (as of September 2021), John Kellum, lack of follow through on addressing a different maintenance issue and reluctant/unwilling to fully address the issue or accommodate us in the interim, not particularly fresh or clean, especially compared to friends apartments in other places in the area (i.e. spots on fridge and cabinets, cabinets old and worn looking, tape and plastic covering things, closet system is supposed to be white but has brown a lot of areas on it that come off with wet cloth, not sure if it’s dirt or perhaps spray paint because it’s a similar shade of brown as the walls.

Details:

While the apartment is spacious and has laundry in the unit, which is nice, the place doesn’t feel particularly clean. The kitchen was filled with ants when we moved in (though it was supposed to be move-in ready for us). We seen so many different types of bugs, though several rounds of pest control have helped. In my experience, when I asked for pest control to come sooner than the one scheduled day, Thursday, they weren’t willing to bring them in. So if you discover a bug issue early in the week, they make you wait. Also, I explained the lack of cleanliness and shabby nature of the clothing racks and other places in the house with tape, plastic, discoloration, etc. There have been a number of cons in my experience with this place and some weren’t handled well, which I didn’t expect based on what they advertise.

You get what you pay for

The location is close to campus (1.2miles) - 20min walk/8min bike ride.
Closest supermarket: (0.7miles) - 15min walk

The amenities are ok. You are not getting granite counters and a nice bathtub (if that is what you are looking for).
The buildings are old (compared to new developments in downtown and other areas), yet they are super decent to live.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
