Berkshire Main Street reviews and highlights
- excellent building amenities and beautiful facilities
- plenty of parking available
- close to center of social life
- one of the best gyms of any complex in the area
- pricey compared to similar buildings in the area
Nice amenities but be prepared for nickel and diming
The apartment building is great- I have no complaints about the gym, pool, facilities, and location. The apartments are nice and so are the amenities. But the management will nickel and dime you for everything, so be prepared to pay a lot in fees for anything that's not explicitly in the lease (an extra key fob, leaving packages in the locker for too long, adding someone to the lease, subletting, you name it...)

Overpriced
The complex buildings by 9th st are overpriced and the quality is terrible. Once you signed you can be considered ignored. They seem they care but they don't if I have to do it all over again I will never live in Bmain. We had a roaches problem and management took over a year to resolve it. The only real benefits of these buildings is that are close to Duke.

Amazing place with some minor issues
It is the best apartment building (infrastructure and amenities-wise) in the 9th street area. However, it does come with some minor issues:
1) It's a couple of blocks from the rest of the 9th street buildings, but the area is very walkable
2) Beware of the apartments that are close to the train tracks, the train noise can be very uncomfortable
3) There were some issues with cockroaches and fire alarms going off this year

Nice Apartment but Unimpressed by Management
The apartment is much nicer than any walk up I lived in in NYC, but the management company won’t take responsibility for some very real problems we’ve had here. The building was overrun by roaches earlier this year (I probably saw one in my apartment per day at the height of it). We also have had fire alarm problems that remain unresolved. It’s pretty ridiculous.

Nice apartment complex but management is not great. Amenities are great.

Great Place to Live with a Pet
This is a very dog-friendly community. Management and maintenance staff are very friendly and responsive. The apartments are just a few years old and in great condition. Beware of the train that runs along Main Street as it can be loud at night. If you live towards the back of the building, you can hardly hear the train. The apartment is a short walk to campus, especially to the Duke Gardens.

Berkshire Main is the best I lived
Personally, I changed four apartments when I came to the Durham. By far the best I had was Berkshire Main. It is 35 minutes walk from Fuqua Business School and 5 minute walk from Harris Teeter Grocery. While going to the school you will have an opportunity to pass through Sarah P. Duke gardens which is an amazing experience that is not possible for most of the available apartments in Durham. Staff at Berkshire Main is the best I saw, compared to Trinity Commons, Heights, Flats, Duke Manor, Chapel Hill, Berkshire Ninth, people who work here were really helpful from the first step we took in the building. They were very friendly and helpful.
The only negative aspect that those apartments have is that the building is close to the railway and trains by pass once in an hour. But, you will be too tired after MQM classes to react to that.

Overall great unit
Fair price and good sunlight in south-facing unit. Right next to train tracks but hardly notice the train anymore. Close to Fuqua. Walls are relatively thick in my building but can't speak to other B-Main building.
Management could be slightly more proactive in communication, but overall not really an issue.

Truly awful management
Things that have happened in our two years: I've had to kill 50+ cockroaches in our apartment, and they refuse to call an exterminator; we took care of a friend's dog for 24 hours and they charged us for doing so (after somehow creepily finding out that the dog was in our apartment); the fire alarm has gone off accidentally 30+ times, sometimes constantly for more than an hour; they've suddenly stopped paying for water filters, lightbulbs and printer paper, despite initially promising to do so. After all of these events and more, the management are rude and dismissive of our concerns. The building and location are great, but I've never been more consistently angry at building management than I have here.

You can get to the school by bus (45 mi) or by car (10 min). Carpooling is very commom.
