The best bang for your buck in Evanston

- Location: Six minutes by e-scooter from here to the hub. 5 minutes to all the grocery stores (whole foods, trader joe's, and jewel osco). 5 minute WALK to the beach!

- Space: You will not find a better deal than JEB in Evanston. I have had 2nd year friends move from Centrum and E2 to JEB and people love the bang for your buck, spacious rooms, location, and natural light. Place is QUIET (I don't hear neighbors unless they are throwing a party which has happened only once).

- Operation: Everything works well. Never had any issues with outlets or water pressure/drainage. The place is quiet & clean. The maintenance & landlord are very responsive. Free water & gas. $100 parking/mo if desired (the garage smells funky though). Laundry in the building on the 1st floor. $1 per washer/dryer cycle via quarters.

- Miscellaneous: No dog breed restrictions with an ESA. I would live here again if I had to do it all over.

Best deal in Evanston

A true hidden gem in Evanston. No need to go for the luxury buildings if you don't mind the basics at such a low price.

Old building that needs to be updated but lots of space

My apartment is huge for the price and would work well for a couple looking to save some money. Really solid location too. However, the building is old and the hallways badly need to updated. The lack of central AC was not fun the first few months of the year. I also have got noise complaints for small parties which really frustrated me. Overall, it's a decent low cost option.

We love 1600 Hinman!

A lovely apartment space with TONS of charm and a huge amount of space. You don't have the amenities of other apartments (no gym, pool, etc) but the community is close-knit, courtyard is beautiful (esp. in the summer months), and the price is right. Heads up - laundy in the basement in coin operated.

Spacious, charming, and VERY budget friendly

Hinman, which we lovingly refer to as "E1," gives you a balanced Kellogg experience. The older building offers spacious apartments with tall ceilings, hardwood floors, fireplaces, and unique, homey vibes. Apartments are arranged in a "U" of brick buildings centered around a stunning courtyard with some of the most fabulous landscaping in Evanston. The location is convenient--a 20 minute walk to campus, and a 5-10 min walk to the larger, more party buildings (E2, Centrum, OHO, Albion, etc.). That's not to say Hinmanites don't like to party! Our parties just look a little different--courtyard lawn games, fancy potlucks, late night wine-fueled conversation, and the occasional animal-onesie/fog-machine/silent (and not-so-silent) disco birthday party.
What we don't have: in-unit laundry (quarter machines in basement), AC (easy to get a window unit), gym (use NU's), pool (use E2's), or basketball court (okay, this would be pretty cool...).
In summary if the finer things of E2 aren't worth an additional 1K/ month and you want a building with character and space, check us out!

Hidden Gem for Low-Maintenance, Value-Seekers!

John Evans is an awesome building. A beautiful, brick building with a terrific courtyard and killer location - 5 min walk from Whole Foods, 5 min walk from the lake, and 15 min walk from the Kellogg Global Hub. People who choose this location are like-minded - they're low-maintenance, love a more vintage feel, and appreciate large square footage for a good value. If you don't mind an older building and don't like unnecessary amenities baked into your rent, then John Evans is for you.

Good

Very spacious apartment for a good deal. No A/C or amenities. Close to the lake and downtown Evanston (but not E2/reserve). Feels like a safer area of Evanston and one of the shorter walks to campus. Building has character. Some issues with roaches in the past.

Great apartment

Cheap, a lot of Kellogg students live here, super spacious, and really unique apartment features like huge windows and moldings! Downsides are the building is old, so repairs are needed sometimes, but the super is fantastic. Highly recommend.

Charming and homey but with quirks

Overall I love this building - lots of character, natural light and very spacious. It is an older building so there are a few quirks - drains clog easily, radiators are noisy and we can't really control when they are on or off, and the laundry room is a dungeon. Overall a great place to live and has a beautiful courtyard!

Downtown Evanston Reviews

Downtown Evanston has everything you need. E2 is walkable to campus, a Target, and plenty of restaurants, as well as Metra and L stations to get to Chicago. Right across the street is a Subway, a Thai restaurant, and a pizza place, plus there’s a 7-Eleven about a block away, so you’re very close to options if you need food in a pinch.
Close to downtown Evanston but a bit far from E2/the reserve. One of closest apartments to Trader Joes/Whole Foods/Jewel Osco while also being close to campus. Very close to the lake!
Downtown Evanston has everything you need from a downtown including grocery stores, restaurants, and convenience stores.
Downtown Evanston is great - plenty of great food within walking distance, Metra and El trains right nearby, a really nice place to be. Only downside is it's far from school and the only truly walkable grocery store is a Whole Foods, which can get expensive. Overall, wouldn't want to live elsewhere though.
Close to grocery stores and restaurants. Very easy access to Lake Michigan as well!
There isn't much to do here, but that's true pretty much everywhere in Evanston. We're in walking distance to all of "downtown" Evanston, so restaurants / fast food / subway, etc. It's a slightly longer walk than desired to Kellogg, but that's fine.
The apartment is central to downtown and is walking distance to most bars, restaurants, shops, beach, etc. Evanston is a bit of a sleepy town (especially during the pandemic...I've been told it was much more vibrant pre-pandemic).
I live just south of the main downtown area, and it's the perfect intersection of being close to the action but also a bit removed when you want some quiet. I like being a in a more residential pocket, so there is slightly less foot traffic and really nice areas to walk around with a dog, etc.
