Nice apartments, mediocre amenities and management

Flats has nice apartments, with a few caveats. The interior of the apartments are admittedly VERY nice, and the indoor/key FOB access to all buildings means things are pretty secure + there are no bugs. However, the amenities are comparatively worse than the ones at other apartments in the area. The gym is tiny, esp when you look at Lofts or Trinity. We've also had a persistent problem with noisy neighbors (and Flats floors do not help). Management has been pretty unhelpful with resolving that situation. You wouldn't be wrong to choose Flats, but I'd personally recommend Trinity or Lofts over this apartment complex. Flats is more expensive than both of those complexes and is definitely a worse value than Trinity is.

Pretty good

Apartment and facilities are in great shape - building is just 2-3 years old now I think. Management can be kind of slow to respond to things, but with enough follow up emails they'll get around to whatever you need. Amenities are good (pool and gym), not quite as lavish as some of the other more luxury buildings, but still nice. Also, great location for Duke students with some good restaurants nearby.

Walking distance (15min) from Fuqua; very responsive staff

The Flats is great - super friendly, approachable, and responsible staff. Every work order we've put in has been resolved within a day. Easily accessible to Fuqua - not very many business school students (more med school and others), but convenient and nice.

Gym solid; pool is irrelevant - it exists, but the sun is blocked off and the water is always way too cold.

Pricey but fantastic!

Extremely organized, well-maintained, maintenance is responsive, gym, pool, green with trees, private yet accessible to chipotle and other restaurants, close to Duke. Overall excellent location. Better to have a car while living here. Apartment has nice study rooms. Small sized apartment, sells fast.

The Flats at The Exchange on Erwin Review

Overall good, management doesn't really do anything with consistently noisy neighbors despite multiple complaints. Besides that, they're pretty responsive.

Love this apartment & its clean feel/'nature' views - just thin walls

My experience has been great! The apartment is spacious - especially the closet, which I LOVE, and the kitchen storage. The balcony is really nice, I love looking over the trees and pathway that makes me feel more like I'm in nature than I might feel in a different unit or neighboring complex that looks over a parking lot or street. The sunlight is pretty good for being in an apartment. I appreciate being able to park on the same level as my apartment. The pool is nice and though I haven't used the gym here or the study rooms etc. yet they are nice as well. And the management and especially the maintenance is WONDERFUL! They're really responsive and kind. I love living here. With all that said, there is one main drawback - the walls are pretty thin, to the point that I can hear my neighbors' conversations to a point, and the noise of my upstairs neighbors walking around can be pretty loud. But with the niceness of the actual apartment and the proximity to Duke and to highways taking you to downtown Durham or nearby amenities in less than 10 minutes, I'm happy I chose here over the other options.

LaSalle road is one of the areas for graduate students. Majority of the apartments are where grad students live so many of your classmates are within the area. On one side of the Belmont is access to some restaurants such as Chipotle or Smashburger so if you are feeling hungry, you can grab some fast food. Walking home at night down LaSalle is safe and grabbing the LaSalle loop bus is quite easy.
Very close (~10-15min walking distance) to the medical school/hospital and lots of restaurants nearby. Recent robberies at the Belmont have left some people shaken, but I have personally never felt unsafe in my apartment. Many first-year medical students live in this neighborhood. Easy to get on the highway, and also a quick drive downtown.
The neighborhood is within walking distance to campus and is very convenient. However, it does not always feel like a "neighborhood". Many of the people in my building are students/residents/people staying here while their houses get remodeled, so there is a transient feeling to the area. Some people worry about the safety here because there are some people with homelessness who occasionally hang around on the corner and ask for money, but I am coming from a big city and this does not bother me.
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
Close by to Duke west campus, Law School, Fuqua Business School, etc. Also, many restaurants in the area within walking distance. Downside is that there's no nearby grocery store. There used to be Kroger up the street but it shut down. Now you have to go all the way downtown to get groceries. (Harris Teeter, Wholefoods, Food Lion, etc.)
There has been a history of robberies in the area, but I think they are less frequent these days. The neighborhood a mix of Duke students and low-income locals. But it's changing to more Duke students and student housing, and great convenience to good restaurants, fast food, and coffee.
Less MBA students than 9th Street apartments, but great access to school (walking distance) as well as a variety of restaurants. No real nightlife in walking distance, but very easy to get to more social parts of town (nothing in Durham is far away).
The neighbourhood is good, most of the MMS students live in the nearby vicinity and most of the times you will catch up with many of them in the bus to school. Though there aren't any grocery stores close by.
