Campus Walk is well located both in terms of proximity to both the campus and basic amenities. However, after 6 pm at nights, the neighbourhood gets very lonely which makes it all the more unsafe to venture.
Recently there have been many break-ins in and around apartments in the neighbourhood, although no one was harmed.
Campus Walk has Belmont and Lofts close by which have a park and pool, so it's a pretty walk down the lane. The Millenium hotel is also close-by so that's a plus. There is also a set of eateries and a spa down the lane.

But the thing that makes Campus Walk ideal for me is proximity to the bus stop and the campus. There is not many non-students here, so when all the students know and interact with each other, it feels nice.

I haven't heard of too many mugging or break-in incidents yet, so it's a relatively safe neighbourhood.
The complex that the Belmont is in is very nice. There are speed bumps for safety, plenty of parking, and the fact that it is gated makes me feel extra secure. The only thing that I don't like about the surrounding area is that people cross the busy street all of the time, and at all hours of the day in order to get to the bus. During the day isn't as big of a problem, but there are no crosswalks and at night it is very hard to see people in the street since it is curvy and poorly lit.
The Belmont is one of the nicer properties in the area. I didn't think the places across the street were as good. They are probably about 30% Duke people and the rest are regular Durham residents. If you go further down LaSalle, it is less safe. The apt complex next to the Belmont is a bit sketchy.
The neighborhood feels very safe. When I first moved in, management sent out a note that two cars had been stolen from the garage, which seemed concerning but I heard that the cars had been left unlocked or something to that effect. I am careful about locking my car in general and have never felt any issues around safety in this neighborhood. It is quite convenient to have a few restaurants/UPS in the adjacent complex.
Next door to plaza with Chipotle, TGIF, UPS, and several other restaurants. Very short walk to another plaza with more restaurants and a wine/cider bar. 20-minute walk to class or to the hospital or to just about any other University amenity. Quiet! Bus stop very close by (though I've never used it). Occasional homeless beggars in plaza next door. Not a big Fuqua social scene here, though (but you can always change that!). A professor told my mother that this is the only neighborhood he would want his daughter to live in had she gone to Duke (for safety reasons primarily).
The close neighborhood is very safe with all the other appartments nearby. Further up the road towards Kroger, it seems less safe. I have never experienced any trouble, but there are always some strangers just standing next to the road, which might make some people worried.
This neighborhood is directly across the street from campus. It's also right next to a plaza with lots of food options - Chipotle, TGIF, Jimmy Johns, etc. There's a bus stop right by the complex, which can be a convenient way to get around Durham.
