If you pay less than $2k for rent, it’s good

Great location and amenities

Great location, very close to campus. Some issues with heat/AC since the pipe system is older. Gym and study spaces are great. Overall a great place to live especially if being close to campus is a priority.

Convenient apartment near Rush

Love how close Atrio is to campus—usually a 5-7 minute walk. Biggest plusses are in unit washer/dryer and updated kitchen. The newly renovated gym is decent. Parking here is not the best as it’s an open lot. There is a security guard at night and there is a package room for deliveries. Lots of residents have pets.

Pros and cons of Atrio

Pros:
- Extremely convenient location (~7 min walk to class)
- Nice common spaces such as the rooftop deck
- Private study rooms
- Fun building-wide events
- Many Rush students live here; makes the transition to medical school easier
- Nice views with lots of natural light
- Personally I have had no issues with noise from neighbors
- Dishwasher, washer and dryer in unit
- I find my studio to be very spacious
- Enclosed outdoor play areas for pets with pet waste bags

Cons:
- Very noisy with ambulance sirens and helicopters arriving to Stroger hospital
- Very expensive parking ($375 per month) that is extremely unsecure; most of my classmates who park there have had their cars broken into or had people attempt to steal them
- Building amenities are frequently unavailable; gym was closed for 4 months and the group fitness studio no longer has fitness classes - management offered no alternatives
- Management has control over the HVAC system - last week my apartment was 82 degrees due to management turning off AC for the winter
- The building is very old but has been remodeled - pipes are original and often cause water backup especially in the shower
- Generally not very safe; people can just walk in if they enter after a resident opens the doors
- Nothing besides hospitals within a reasonable walking distance; need to drive/bike/use public transportation for grocery shopping, pharmacy etc

Atrio

Likely the closest apartment complex to Rush (3 blocks away aka <10 min walk) - perfect if you need/prefer to walk to school. Right across the street from Stroger as well. Also right off the IMD Blue Line stop (<10 min ride into the Loop), plus a Divvy station across the street. All utilities minus electric included, as well as a small gym (24/7), study lounge + rooms, and rooftop + lounge. There are a lot of different floor plans but most have top-down windows, which is a great feature. It's newly renovated and reopened 1.5 years ago, with a modern and toned-down feel. Parking is $250/mth and outdoors. $50/mth for pets I believe? They also just created dog-walking areas around the building.

Not a whole lot to do/explore nearby (biggest downside) and no grocery stores within walking distance, but a block down Ogden there is a small plaza with Starbucks, Chipotle, Panda Express, BDubs, and more. It's also not too far from Livingston Park where Rush students play flag football.

They have studios and 1/2/3-bedrooms here. Rent is on the pricier side but is discounted for some units through Chicago's ARO program (likely all occupied as of now), so definitely take a look into this to see if you qualify (also can be found for various apartment buildings throughout the city).

Management is pretty good and responsive but sometimes they'll ask you to crack the windows open when the central heating gets wonky.

Close but with some serious disadvantages

I absolutely love how close the property is to campus. It feels great especially when we have to be on campus by 7:30 AM or I want to stop by to have lunch at home. However, there is a serious lack of restaurants and life around. It is difficult to get groceries if you don’t have a car. The closest one would be a train stop away at Target. Parking is also $250 a month for a spot. Most people here have to get it delivered. Also if you live on the south side of the building, BEWARE! It is an old building that was made to look new so the AC system can only give either hot or cold air for the entire building. In the spring and fall, some apartments will be very hot while others very cold. Currently it is end of November and my apartment has been in the 80s because it faces the sun all day. The building has switched to heat so my AC unit only gives hot air and there is nothing I can do about it. We have complained and they stated that they never withheld the information from us we simply did not ask, so they are not obligated to do anything. They recommend to open windows and use the blinds. However, the blackout blinds do not help with this and our apartment has only 1 window thats opens 4 inches. To end things on a positive note the maintenance people have been really helpful. They always respond in less than 24 hours. They are amazing.
