Excellent common areas but not safe

Common area spaces are excellent and they do a lot of social events, which is nice to get to know people. One thing: the building is not safe. Bikes were stolen multiple times from balcony's apartments and bike storage. Administration said they couldn't do anything since was crimes increased around the area. But we had 2 waves of stolen bikes in less than 1 month.

Berkshire Ninth Review

The overall apartment is great. If you are looking to live here, I would look at rooms that aren't close to the dog park. I live next to it and it is distracting because there are dogs outside all the time. Other than that, I really enjoy living here. It is in a great location and the building is clean.

Safe & Well-Kept Community

I have enjoyed my experience at B9 for the most part! There are lots of amenities such as a gym, pool, dog park, dog wash station, office center, free printing, etc! The facilities are really nice and well-kept and the community feels safe in terms of security and locked gates. The trash pick-up service is really nice and they also do a good job of planning events for the residents. However, for the price that I am paying, these offerings should be the least that they do. My only complaint is that the walls are pretty thin so it has been an issue with hearing my neighbor above me.

Perfect Location

I really enjoy living at Berkshire at ninth. The location is fantastic, I just cross the street and am at Harris Teeter. I can walk to nice restaurants and shops and I feel very safe. The appliances are fairly new and the structure of the building is good, the staff is very friendly and the amenities are good. It is extremely pet friendly and they even have a dog park. Not many LLM students live there but there are many Fuqua and JD students.

Great Location, But Has Its Issues

B9 has a great location and is super close to Harris Teeter, the other 9th Street apartments, and 9th Street bars/restaurants, which makes meeting with other students and carpooling convenient. The apartments are nicely sized, especially for studios, and management is responsive. However, the building seems to have pest control and security issues that largely go unaddressed. There are cockroaches in apartments and throughout the property (especially if you have an exterior entrance) and there have been recent break-ins and theft due to the garage gates not closing properly and security being terminated. The gated parking was important for me and the property generally feels safe overall.

Not perfect, but close

I love living at B9, and I think it's the most upscale of the popular places to live on ninth street. We've had a few hiccups, like an outstanding maintenance request or un-answered emails (so we have to swing by the front office, instead), but otherwise have been really pleased with the office staff. The apartments are nice and spacious, and the walls are thick. My only complaint is that the building is not very secure; our gate to the courtyard was broken for WEEKS and this year the bike storage closet was raided.

Getting around Ninth Street

Ninth Street Reviews

Neighborhood has been great. Haven't been commuting to school all that frequently for obvious reasons, but takes less than 10 minutes to do so. I can grab everything I need and meet with friends all within walking distance. Durham could use more street lights in general, but in terms of safety, I think 9th street is your best option!
Best place to live hands down. Next to the supermarket, so many food options and many complexes in the area. Near downtown and Duke. Great if you’re new in town because it is super safe. Perfect if you have a car because the only downside is that depending on what Duke school you’re in it might not be walking distance.
Ninth Street is super walkable and majority of Fuquans live in the area. Definitely worth it to pay a little more to live in walking distance of so many classmates. Plus the restaurants on Ninth Street are great, and a short walk (~3 mins) to East Campus to use the walking trail!
Everything is close: other complexes like S9, B9; bars like flying bull, the tavern, supermarkets like Harris Teeter or Whole Foods, East campus hiking route.

You can get to the school by bus (45 mi) or by car (10 min). Carpooling is very commom.
Neighborhood is fine. All the Duke grad students live in the same area so it makes for a pleasant student community, and there are some decent restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance.
Harris Teeter and Whole Foods are right nearby, and the area feels generally safe. 5 min from the highway if you need to drive outside of Durham. ~10 min to get to the WaDuke/Science Drive.
The 9th St. neighborhood is great because it is within walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants on 9th St. It could be better if it were closer to Fuqua and/or downtown Durham.
All the restaurants around the 9th street area are within 5 mins walk from the complex. The campus is an 8-10 minute drive. Downtown Durham is also an 8-10 minute drive away.
