Love this place

I am in the middle of my third year living here. Great place for the price and wonderful management. My packages are kept by the front-desk and delivered to my apartment by the super. The super will come incredibly quickly if there are any problems (almost never are). Laundry in building is very affordable.

Trade some amentities to be close to everything

The laundry machines are coin-operated relics from another age and the elevators do whatever they want, but there is a Metra train station behind the building and two bus stops (with free-for-students buses running to the campus) within half a block. Walgreens and Treasure Island are just across the train tracks. There are single garages available for rent if the waitlist ever clears.

The front office staff is a little slow to respond, but very friendly and understanding. The maintenance staff (his name is Bob) is amazing. Ask Bob to fix something and he'll get it done quickly. He also brings packages around to the apartments every night.

The building feels safe, even though the hallways seem to have been transplanted from the hotel in the Shining. My door has four locks on it.

Cats are allowed without a deposit but dogs are not allowed at all.

Overall this building is great. It is inexpensive compared to some of the surrounding buildings and the location is ideal. I have no complaints.

Stellar Price, great location within Hyde Park

Easy commute to the Law School. Walking distance to grocery, pharmacy, mail, public transportation, restaurants, and the far more expensive apartments your classmates will be living in (but closer to the aforementioned places). Older building, but kept in decent shape. The actual units are much nicer than the hallways. If you want luxury, this isn't it. If you want a solid place to live, this is.

Amazing old character-filled building

This is an amazing apartment. It's admittedly no frills (no gym, no doorperson, no dishwasher, etc.) and a relatively small space (500 sq ft) but it's extremely affordable and great value. The management company is extremely responsive, packages are delivered right to my apartment door, and the space itself is charming and homey: wood floors, a real-life Murphy bed, and plenty of space for our purposes. Being near the restaurant strip on 55th is extremely convenient, with easy access (<2 minute walk) to 171 bus to campus, 6 bus downtown, Metra trains, and Divvy bikes. Otherwise it's a 20-minute walk to campus and less than 5 minutes to two grocery stores. Downsides are some noise from trains when the windows are open and radiator heat that isn't unit-controlled (but we just turn our radiators off which keeps the temperature about right).

Hyde Park Reviews

I like Hyde Park. I'm close to everything on 53rd, and most of the time I don't feel unsafe. I'm also close enough to Kenwood that I can walk/run there for a more quiet, less busy experience. Kenwood Park is the best.
There's nothing that compares to being in the neighborhood that UChicago is in. Great restaurants and access to the world class lakefront
I like living in Hyde park- it's close to the law school, and I have all the shops and things I need around.
I really enjoy living in Hyde Park. I love how residential and clean it is. It's a great place to go on walks and explore the beautiful historic houses throughout the area. Yet, it still has plenty of restaurants and places to go. It's nice to live in this residential area close to the Law School and still be only a 20-minute uber away from downtown. Safety is something I think about a lot, but this comes with living in any big city. I try to avoid walking alone at night and walk in groups whenever possible. I never have my music blasting. I also carry my pepper spray and keys in my hand at all times when I'm out walking.
Very close to "downtown" Hyde Park so pretty much everything is around you. Transportation to the University of Chicago is also really close by. So are several CTA bus stops and the Metra. There are several restaurants, grocery stores, and shops close by. The building is truly located in a great place.

There have been very few issues with crime and gun violence around the area but like in every major city, being vigilant is important. I have not been too worried about safety but I am careful because things do happen.
Hyde park isn't the most convenient place to live in Chicago, but it is the most convenient place to get to University of Chicago. At times it may not feel like the safest area, but personally I have never experienced any issues. The commute to school is pretty easy, give or take the accuracy of the bus times.
It's got everything you need. Biggest thing is obviously the proximity to campus.
I love living in Hyde Park, you can view lots of beautiful scenery and easily access to the Loop area for entertainment.
Though Hyde Park is safer area compared to the nearby, needless to say, you should be careful not to walk alone in the nighttime.
