Affordable housing close to campus with excellent communication from management

Most affordable housing the in the area. Some amenities (dog park, electric vehicle charging stations, ample parking) and within 1 mile of the hospital or undergrad campus. Trinity properties are extremely responsive to all questions and concerns from residents. They always reply within 24 hours. The only downside to this apartment is safety concerns when walking at night along Campus Walk Ave and LaSalle, but there are Duke and Durham buses that pickup directly in front of the apartment complex.

Campus Walk

Nice apartment with everything we need (dishwasher, in unit washer/dryer, pet friendly, very responsive landlord/maintenance, dog park, lots of other graduate students, very inexpensive, 1 mile from the hospital/campus). The only downside is that there aren't a ton of additional amenities (no gym or pool) and there have been a few instances of crime in the area (although management has responded exceptionally well to these reports and has taken a lot of action to keep residents safe).

Excellent for the Value

My experience at Campus Walk has been very good so far. The hardwood floors are beautiful, there's lots of privacy, management responds to maintenance requests extremely quickly, and the heating/AC works very well. My only complaint is in regard to my inconsiderate neighbors, but that likely occurs at every apartment complex.

Campus Walk Review

Campus walk is great if you are looking for a place with value. The units are older, but the property management company does a great job keeping the complex neat and tidy. The property management company is also very responsive and takes a lot of measures to ensure our safety/wellbeing. If you are looking for a place near campus that won't break the bank, then this is a great place to live!

You Get What You Pay For

The spaces are nice and well-priced. We haven't had serious bug problems (3-4 roaches the entire time in residence). The management company is usually pretty responsive to maintenance issues. It's close to the school.

However, there have been continually escalating safety issues, starting with car break-ins, then to muggings, and then to an armed robbery where multiple roommates were held at gunpoint. They are working on a fence, but residents have not gotten progress updates, and it has been suggested that we (in the upstairs apartments; downstairs have alarm systems) put out our own cash to get Ring systems. Security cameras were mentioned, but again, with no progress or updates. Sometimes, management has gone so far as to accuse residents of furthering the unsafe environment (blaming us for not calling police, etc.).

The landlords are good people. The place is cheap. But many of us no longer feel like that is worth it amidst the very serious safety and security concerns.

Great location, cheap

The apartment is located a 15-20 minute walk from the hospital and is way cheaper than the nearby apartments. It is definitely on the small side but has everything you need. Management is very nice and responsive.

A solid choice

This property is not fancy, but is has a very responsive, friendly management company. The interiors are taken care of, though sloppily, and it does not have any amenities, but if you are a student you don't really need them. Duke transit stops immediately at the entrance to the lot, so it is very convenient to campus.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
