Good apartment for those who wants to live close to Law, Business and Public Schools

Generally good apartment complex. Very close to Public School, Law School, and Business School. It takes me 15 minutes walking to get to Law School. If you don't have a car so it's the best choice. Apartments have swimming pool and gym. If you want to live there choose the upper floor to avoid noise from above. Also consider which side do you prefer whether it is a sunlight side or a shadow side. A lot of place for parking.

Chapel Tower - Hidden Jewer

Pros:
- Close to campus; 10-15min walk to Fuqua
- Quiet community
- Ample parking spots are available
- Cheap ($900 rent per month; 10% Duke student discount)
- Management Office is relatively good
- Good basic gym facilities

Cons:
- Not too close to your classmates (majority at 9th Street)
- No nearby grocery stores
- Sometimes (once a month), have to deal with pests. However Management responded positively by engaging with pest controller to clean the house

Good experience

Definitely not fancy but management is helpful and the apartment is nice! The gym and pool are pretty good too and the walk to campus is short!

A great deal & as close to campus as you can get

-Highly convenient to campus: door-to-door, the walk from my apartment to the Fuqua building is 10 minutes
-Very reasonably priced for the amount of space I get (2 bedrooms, 950 sqft)
-Not a luxury apartment, but I could tell when I moved in that the carpets were new, the oven/stovetop was nearly new, and the other appliances were in good shape.
-Thick walls; I rarely hear my neighbors
-Has a small gym onsite with the basics
-Very few Duke students live here so it's not a strong social scene
-Apartment management does not always provide great customer service, but I've had only good experiences with maintenance staff (responsive and helpful)
-Good for someone who would choose a quiet place to live over proximity to bars/nightlife (though I can walk to a handful of restaurants on Erwin Rd)

Chapel Tower Apartments Review

I have reserved my apartment at Chapel Tower while staying in my home country. I recommend doing that way before you arrive because then you may have problems finding apartments. I had to complete an application form and pay an application fee (approx. $200). They check your background and when everything is ok they send you an email with a contract to sign on DocuSign. For international students there are not so many requirements, the most important is your visa, but you can still reserve it while it is in process and then you send it to the administration. Ask for a 10% student discount! I rented 2 bedroom apartment for 9 months for $945 utilities and furniture excluded (water, electricity, internet, sewer). You can have a utility pack (doesn't include internet, and not sure if it includes water and sewer) for $180 and a furniture pack for $180. I didn't request them and for now, the utilities were cheaper than the utility pack. But if you don't want to worry about anything you can request both, but probably it will be more expensive than doing it on your own. The administration was always very helpful and there are people that speak Spanish. The apartment is spacious, it doesn't have a balcony, only windows. If we have any problems (e.g., something broken in the apartment) the administration resolves them quite quickly. The neighborhood is not perfect, but it's ok. Some neighbors put the music loud. Sometimes it may seem that it is not safe, but I haven't had any issues, and there is a guardian during the night. The apartments have a swimming pool, a gym, and barbecues where you can meet with friends. These amenities are not first-class amenities and I barely used them, but still, it is a plus. The good thing is that the apartment is very close to the University, like a 10-minute walk to Duke Law and Fuqua. The parking is for free.

Best bang for your buck

Chapel Towers is the cheapest and closest apartment complex to Fuqua. If you are like me and only needs a clean, decent living space without luxury amenities, and have the ability to walk 15 mins to class, then this is the best place for the money. Ninth street is also just a 8 min drive or bus ride away.

All around good but not amazing

Starting with a few negatives:
You wont get a community feel at this appartment. While there are a lot of graduate students living here everyones seperated with no central meeting place.
Bugs can be a problem. Even being on the upper floor you have to keep your place clean unless you want some bugs hanging out with you. If you do though they arent much of a problem at all.

Pros:
Great location right off duke campus. Easily within walking distance for all my classes.
Good student package options for utilities and rent. Most everything is included.
Cheaper than most other options around.
Neighbors are quiet and respectable. (in my experience)
Management has been understanding and kind. One of the only apartments that actually emailed and called me back when I was looking initially.

If you're looking for a great place to stay that looks really nice and has a community feel this isnt for you. If you want a place thats cheaper to stay at, dont mind outside looks like me, and just want a place that works at everything with no hassle then its for you.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
