Good for the price

The complex is not a luxury apartment, but it does have amenities like a pool and small gym. It's within walking/biking distance to campus and there are bus stops right by the complex. Pet friendly, free parking (up to 4 spots for my 2bed apartment) and really responsive management. The inside of the apartment is new rugs/paint for each new tenant. Not a ton of storage but decent bedroom closets.

Only two caveats. One, its an old building so you get problems with pests, broken ACs, outlet issues etc. HOWEVER management will come fix things asap. The maintenance people are so nice. Two, there are not a lot of other medical/graduate students and only a few duke students in general. This compledx has a lot of families/working individuals. All of them have been nice but not much social opportunity there.

Appropiate for a grad student

It is affordable and conveniently located within walking distance of Duke's west campus. The administration has always been responsive when we have had problems (small repairs). We haven't had issues often though. The units are fine and the complex feels safe. It is very likely that some of your neighbors will also be your classmates.

If you want to keep it affordable and within walking distance of Duke, no other place beats Chapel Tower.

Decent Place, questionable neighborhood

The 1 bhk apartments are decent. Pros: very close to Duke (10 mins walk), open spaces, get all deliveries at your doorstep (you don't have to go down or outside the complex). Cons: Neighborhood is not safe, community is not gated.

Not perfect, but a solid complex

It’s an old building so you are always going to have issues (electrical things go out, bugs). However, I’ve never had more prompt service then this property management coming to fix what I needed them to. It’s not the most glamorous but it’s really affordable, can walk to campus, and has more amenities than I expected (pool, small gym). Overall, it’s a good choice if you’re on a limited budget.

A great deal & as close to campus as you can get

I chose this location primarily for its proximity to Fuqua and its reasonable rent and I have not been disappointed. I can walk from my apartment to the doors of Fuqua in 10 minutes; it's a pretty safe walk too because it's 90% on campus. I love that! (There are multiple buildings in this complex so you could be 15 minutes away max). Parking is free and you can have up to two vehicles per lease (for a two bedroom). I live by myself in a two bedroom and am still paying less than lots of apartment complexes. The building is not new by any means, but the age of the building means the walls are not thin. Downsides: the vinyl floors are cheap and get knicks in them very easily, there was a sloppy paint job on the baseboards before I moved in, and the window mechanisms are pretty old. For me personally, the square footage (950 sq ft.) and multiple closets were worth the trade off. I had bad experiences with the management while I was waiting to sign my lease (they were disorganized, frequently unresponsive) but don't have complaints about management post-move in. Maintenance is responsive: my garbage disposal didn't work upon move-in and they fixed it within two days. My washer broke and they replaced it with a new one within a week.

Take a moment to look beyond the 9th street area - there are other great (and more affordable!) places to live!

Budget Stay Closest to Fuqua

Chapel Towers provides you all the necessary amenities within an 10 minute walk to Fuqua at the best price amongst all apartment complexes. If you share an apartment with a flatmate, all the expenses including rent, electricity, water, utilities and wifi should come to around 600$ max.The apartments have pre installed washer, dryer, fridge, induction stove and an oven. The management is quick to respond to queries and complaints and you should ideally not be facing any problem. Its not a gated community though so the neighbors can be a bit sketchy but everyone minds their own business and I personally have had no problems so far.

I would definitely recommend Chapel if you are on a budget.

Good option for Duke students

Its location is extremely convenient for a Duke student. It located within a 13 minute walk from Duke's west campus - Law, Business and PP school, etc.
The apartments and the facilities are simple, yet sufficient for a student. They have responded to our work requests promptly.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
