Awesome place to live

This place is super close to Fuqua and way cheaper than Station 9 or B9. It's an awesome place to live with spacious apartments and an amazingly helpful management team. Couldn't recommend it more!

Great apartments, but quality of tenants is on the decline

Expensive living compared to other available apartments. But the apartment is very comfortable and spacious, the management is always responsive, and guests can access the complex with a gate code linked directly to your phone, so you don't have to walk up to the gate to let them in. The quality of tenants has gone down in the past 6 months. Our first year here other tenants were respectful of shared spaces and facilities, like waste collection. This year we have had issues with tenants leaving household waste bags in the common hallways, and failing to properly store their bikes. Management are responsive to requests to clean this up, but there is only so much they can do.

I loved living at The Belmont!

When I was looking for a place to live, I wanted something nice but not too expensive. The places across from the Belmont didn't seem safe enough for me even though they were cheap and The Lofts/Trinity Commons were too high for my budget in a one bedroom. I found the perfect happy medium with a The Belmont. It's a great place to live. It allows you to walk, drive, or bus to campus. The walk is nice during the fall and spring. The drive is super quick. The Duke bus stop is right outside the Belmont and there's an app you can use to track where the bus is. I used to also watch for the bus from my window. I recommend trying to live in a unit close to the front if you will bus or walk often. Biking is also nice but there is a medium sized hill you have to go up when getting to Erwin. The community itself is nice and quiet with lots of Duke people living there. There aren't a lot of Fuqua people there though unless you coordinate with other friends in advance. I love how easy parking is and the management team is very nice and responsive. Note, it is also very safe now. I ALWAYS felt safe and I was a woman living alone. Things inside are all well maintained and modern enough.

Great value

It's been great living at The Belmont - it's quiet and you get great value for the living space. The rooms aren't the glitziest, but it's sufficient. The only downside is that a majority of Fuquans do not live at this complex. On the flipside, it's a walking distance to Fuqua so it's very convenient.

A good place for students to live

This is a nice place for Duke students to live with reasonable rent price and basic amenities that fulfill everyday needs, such as free coffee/tea, exercise facility, squash court (though it's hardly used), and package room. Staff have been kind and responsive to concerns so far.

Quiet and clean

Overall, it is a good place to live. 1.5 kilometer away from Fuqua with bus stop nearby and free parking space. Good gym, big leasing office, great sunlight. However, it is not as safe as I think. I was robbed by a guy just 20 meters away from the gate.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
