Pros/Cons

Pros: Great buildings, location, and amenities.

Cons: Although close to campus, it is a sketchy location (one break in, etc.). Awful managers that are extortionists and hate college kids.

Very nice apartment close to Fuqua

The newest apartment-only four years. It has nice environment and decorations. Vey clean and organized. Elevators are new and convenient. Only thing is that leasing office is not very helpful when you need them.

Home for MMS

Like:
- A lot of people from MMS. Some undergrads and PHD.
- Nice pool with BBQ.
- Relatively safe place. I feel me safe both outside and inside
- Clean and a very few insects.

Dislike:
- Price
- GYM is small and doesn't have machines except for cardio
- Poor breakfast. I would suggest to bring more snacks instead
- No adjust for AC or HEAT

Overall great some small problems now and then

Living in Heights is mostly great - it's close to school and most of my classmates in the program. Their service staff are also responsive. However, my roommate did experience unfixed continuous water leakage problem for a few months.

Nothing special; just "average"

Expensive, but convenient if you're in the MMS program. It's about a 6 minute drive to Fuqua. The only reason I chose the Heights over other places, was that most of the MMS lives here, so it's convenient for hanging out, carpooling, and for team meetings. We usually meets in the team rooms in the club house that are open 24/7. However, other than that, there are other places that are nearly the same distance to Fuqua (Lofts and Trinity Commons, for example) that offer better amenities for the same price. The gym at the heights is small, basic, and always packed. The pool is okay; but closes at dawn. The club house doesn't have much going on (no printer, no game room, very basic coffee machine, no snack bar), so the other apt complexes are much better as far as amenities. Maintenance is good and fast. Generally quiet and peaceful. I live facing the pool and still never had issues with loud noises when I need to study. Bryan at the leasing office is great, helpful and personable; Adaisha is horrible and has the personality of a piece of paper. I live in a basic 1/1 and the apt size is decent, but there's no storage other than your closet. (No place to even store a vacuum cleaner, for example!) I can't speak to the apt size/features of the other neighborhoods nearby, because I've only been in their common areas. There are no shops, restaurants or grocery stores walking distance to the LaSalle area in general, which I don't like. This whole area is kind of dead... you can't just walk and get food next door. Looking back, I'd live in the 9th street area. It's lively, there's a lot more going on, Harris Teeter is right there, many cute restaurants, shops, etc. I didn't even consider it when I moved to Durham, because I thought 9th street was "far", but it really isn't! If you have a car it's only a 9 minute drive from Fuqua (a mile farther than the Heights). Living at the heights is just "meh" for what you pay, and the cons (or more like, lack of anything special or that makes it stand out) outweighs the pro of living in the same building as your friends/team. You can always come here for meetings and to hang out, then go back home to your way nicer apartment complex at Trinity, Lofts, or 9th Street! Hope this helps :)

Really good place to live

LOTS of MMS students live here, it's a short walk from a grocery store. It's a long walk from Fuqua but there is a bus that goes there every 30 minutes

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
