Heights

Pros) The apartment is safe with gates and multiple door locks that you have to go through with keys. The office spaces for common use is great and it offers free coffee and snacks. Parking spaces are spacious and enough.

Cons) Maintenance often doesn't work in time. Besides the high rent, you have to pay water, electricity, and internet fees all separately, all of which are costly as well.

Where many MMS students live...

Although you do pay a premium to live here the apartments and facilities are top notch. There is a bus stop outside the complex. Easy access to Kroger around the corner on Hillsborough Road. Close to other complexes with MMS students (Belmont, Holly Hill, Poplar West, Etc.) . Garbage disposal service. Parking included and convenient. If in the MMS program a great place for spontaneous socialization, which is important to building relationships outside of school.

Great with some maybes...

I loved living here, but I was dissuaded to use some of the communal amenities for rowdiness from the other residents. I never used the pool after hearing that some residents were throwing plants and other things in the pool. Additionally, sometimes noise was a problem from the younger tenants. The management was great, but you just had to make sure you followed up if you needed something. Would definitely recommend it.

A luxurious stay

I have had a great experience with heights. We have a great clubhouse. We have free breakfast during the weekdays. Although the breakfast is not that great. The apartment is secure, and all the fittings in the apartment are of excellent quality.

Not bad

Pretty good overall, except for a few things. First, you can only turn in rent during office hours. Second, their called in help is not as competent as desired - they failed to notice dripping water and less than a month later, mold had formed in my apartment.

The Heights with their good and bad sides

In general the housing at the Heights is not bad. The rooms and kitchens are nice and you'll have plenty of space. You'll also certainly find a lot of other Duke and especially Fuqua and Duke Law students. Some ammenities, such as the coffee bar, the awesome pool and the BBQ area are really cool about the Heights.
However, I think that the rent is highly overpriced.
After a while of living here you will see that a few things become annoying, such as if for no obvious reason the garbage would not be picked up. Also, lately a few incidents of strangers roaming around the property have been reported. The area around the Heights (Duke Manor) is sketchy at night and I would recommend to be cautious when walking after dark given criminal incidents have been reported before.
If you're ok with the above-mentioned conditions and look for a fun place that can be made a cozy home, then the Heights will be a good choice for your time in Durham!

Solid

Great housing with new kitchen and up-to-date bathrooms. The only problem is cockroaches...we've found more than our fair share even with having the apartment spray for them

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
