Expensive but worth it
I lived in Shadyside/East Liberty and Squirrel Hill. While they're closer to campus, The Docks is super safe and is extremely study-friendly. It's also pet-friendly. The only weird part there is that you have to get renter's insurance, something pretty uncommon in Pittsburgh. Rent is steep, but the apartments are huge. If interested, get an apartment on the 3rd floor only - views are way better.
