Space, proximity, value

It's an old building with spacious floor plans and low rents. Shuttle leaves from one block away. I can typically walk to the Jake in 9 mins.

This building is in an amazing location and you get so much for the price. I have more space than I know what to do with! The courtyard of the building is beautiful and the building manager lives on the first floor so he is very prompt with any repairs. The building is "vintage" so there are radiators and no central air, though I have two AC units which work well. It is only a 10 minute walk to the Jake and one block away from downtown Evanston.

Excellent apartment

The apartment is spacious and filled with light. There is lots of storage space. It's easy to get to and from the building to the Jake. The super is incredibly responsive and kind. Bathroom is a little small, but all of the pluses of this apartment make up for this one small minus.

Great value / Location

Charming building, within a 10-minute walk of the Jake. Generally quiet building / neighborhood. Within 10 minute walk of anything in downtown evanston, including a 2 min walk to Whole Foods. The building is about 100 years old, so creaking wood floors and plaster walls (these can be a pain to hang things / drill into but doable).

Location and price!

The John Evans building is great if you're looking for a place close to campus for a good price. I moved here because I didn't want roommates, and was able to find a large, 750sq ft "studio" for a steal. I love the building.
I wish that parking were included (you can rent a space under the building for $100/mo), by other than that I love it.

Great, charming apt - very affordable and big

Though John Evans building is much older than many of the options around Evanston, the apartments are big, charming, and affordable. The bathrooms and kitchens could use updating, but overall it's a great deal for the price.

Older, but spacious apartments

This is an old building but the apartments are huge.
Each apartment is a little different so it is worth checking a few to find the one you like.
One downside is the not-so-easy access to the laundry room but other than that this is a great building

Good value at John Evans

The John Evans Building is a great value. Paying $1.075 for over 800 sq ft in a studio is a good find. I like the hardwood and the location - near downtown but roughly 10 to 12 minutes from campus. It's a good deal for someone inclined not to live in a big/fancy (and expensive) apartment with lots of amenities.

Good location, but many issues

The apartment has a very good location (near Whole Foods, Chase Bank, dry cleaning, LOTS of restaurants and cafes, there's a NU shuttle stop very near, and it's about an 11 min. walk to the Jake). It is also very spacious without paying too much. Lately have had some issues (heat not on, messy construction work, and so on) and administration has not been responsive at all, even though many of us have complained about different issues. Laundry room is a nightmare, the access is difficult (take the elevator down to the garage, walk across the garage, go up some dark stairs, etc) and the room itself is not pleasant to the eye. I personally no longer recommend this building.

Downtown Evanston has everything you need. E2 is walkable to campus, a Target, and plenty of restaurants, as well as Metra and L stations to get to Chicago. Right across the street is a Subway, a Thai restaurant, and a pizza place, plus there’s a 7-Eleven about a block away, so you’re very close to options if you need food in a pinch.
Close to downtown Evanston but a bit far from E2/the reserve. One of closest apartments to Trader Joes/Whole Foods/Jewel Osco while also being close to campus. Very close to the lake!
Downtown Evanston has everything you need from a downtown including grocery stores, restaurants, and convenience stores.
Downtown Evanston is great - plenty of great food within walking distance, Metra and El trains right nearby, a really nice place to be. Only downside is it's far from school and the only truly walkable grocery store is a Whole Foods, which can get expensive. Overall, wouldn't want to live elsewhere though.
Close to grocery stores and restaurants. Very easy access to Lake Michigan as well!
There isn't much to do here, but that's true pretty much everywhere in Evanston. We're in walking distance to all of "downtown" Evanston, so restaurants / fast food / subway, etc. It's a slightly longer walk than desired to Kellogg, but that's fine.
The apartment is central to downtown and is walking distance to most bars, restaurants, shops, beach, etc. Evanston is a bit of a sleepy town (especially during the pandemic...I've been told it was much more vibrant pre-pandemic).
I live just south of the main downtown area, and it's the perfect intersection of being close to the action but also a bit removed when you want some quiet. I like being a in a more residential pocket, so there is slightly less foot traffic and really nice areas to walk around with a dog, etc.
