A nice old apartment works for us

We live in a small apartment in Hillcrest neighborhood, close to the UCSD shuttle, Balboa Park, and a small cultural district. The property is owned by a single person, who is very friendly and responsive.

Fine for the price

I am in the non-master bedroom, and pay $650 rent. At this price the room is fine, but not great.

The apartment is rather small, the single bathroom (vs 1.5) is quite annoying, and the interior is quite old (it feels like it is from the 70s). There are semi-frequent pest problems (baby cockroaches every 6+ months) despite us being clean, that the property managers deal with promptly (but they are still annoying).

The location within Hillcrest is quite good, although it is roughly 2 miles to the Hillcrest shuttle, so walking there is fairly slow. One can bike there, but the shuttle only fits two bikes on the front of it (so you either have to lock up your bike at the hospital or wait if you are the third). You can also take the city bus into campus - there are nearby stops, but this takes roughly 1.5 hours in my experience. It may be better when the trolley is done.

Overall I don't regret living here, but also am planning on moving because of the aforementioned downsides.
