AVA Van Ness

This is a great place to live. it is close to the Metro and Giant. It is in a safe neighborhood and as a runner this is very important to me. I love the pool and patio space during the summer and an added bonus is the building will have community events.

Older building but nice

I've been living at Ava Van Ness for a year and a half and I haven't had any complaints so far. While the building is a little old, all the amenities are updated and the staff is incredible! The front desk is always helpful and keep packages safe. Maintenance requests are responded to quickly, and our unit recently had the kitchen remodeled, so it is quiet nice. There have been a few break-ins to cars in the garage, but I haven't had any issue with my car. Parking is expensive but not any more than other DC apartments. Building is 1 block from the Van Ness metro.

A Livable Community

The AVA Van Ness offers a livable community with dogs. There is a gym and pool and overall good facilities. The building has a wide range of residents from college students to olden people and many dogs. The management is sometimes slow to respond to complaints about neighbors on the 9th floor who play their music loud.

Great first apartment

Great apartment for getting situated in the city. Pretty expensive for what you get but a great location. Right next to the Van Ness metro, CVS, and Giant. Appliances could be updated. Love having a pool and tennis court area. Front desk staff is super helpful and welcoming!

Great Place to live

The Ava is an interesting place, some may know it as the consulate, but its been given a facelift. The building is right off of the Van Ness metro, near a grocery store, sushi, thai and a liquor store that delivers (no, I'm not kidding". Right down Connecticut avenue is a quick drive to bars, restaurants and activities. The view is astounding, the bedroom is large, the patio is great in the summer. The front desk day staff is super friendly. Remember your key card and you'll coast just fine. It's great having someone get your packages. You get luxury amenities in an older building, and in DC, that's almost unheard of.

Perfect Spot for Students and Young Professionals

Great place, great people, great amenities! Right across from a grocery story, the university, and the metro as well. Really enjoyed living here. All of the people really go above and beyond to make it a friendly and engaging environment. Safe place and extremely pet friendly.

Getting around Forest Hills

Forest Hills Reviews

44 reviews
The Forest Hills/Van Ness neighborhood is great. It is a very short walk to Tenleytown (15 mins) and a 10 min walk to the Van Ness Metro, Giant Food, CVS, and a plethora of good coffee shops and restaurants. The M4 bus stops 3 blocks up the road and takes you straight to AU and the L2 runs very consistently on Connecticut Ave. The Chesapeake backs up to Forrest Hills Park and Rock Creek is right down the street with lots of trails. Overall, the whole neighborhood is very safe and student-friendly.
The neighborhood is very nice. Many things are in walking distance like a few restaurants, a movie theater, and the Cleveland Park Metro stop. It is a bit of a food desert in that the grocery stores and restaurants that are accessible are a tad on the expensive side. The neighborhood is pretty quiet and people are usually pretty friendly. Overall, a decent neighborhood for people at different stages in their lives.
Van Ness is on several bus routes and very near to the (Van Ness) metro stop. Moving off of Connecticut Ave. quickly becomes entirely residential, but there are restaurants and other amenities (such as grocery stores, dry cleaners, etc) along Connecticut. It's not a crazy or busy neighborhood like several others, which personally, I appreciate, but it does mean you'll have to go a bit farther than home if you're looking to go out for the night.
Van Ness/Forest Hills is quiet and a little boring. Not a lot of places to go out to eat or grab a drink in the immediate area. However, Cleveland Park and Tenleytown are fairly close. I love walking our dog up around International Drive and the embassies there. We frequently see deer coming up from Rock Creek Park, and the UDC/Howard Law students are mostly very courteous (many of them live in the neighborhood too, so they care about it also). The neighborhood feels very safe--lots of police presence, Secret Service sub-station in the neighborhood, and the local vagabonds are not aggressive to pedestrians--they mostly mind their own business.
I like the area on Connecticut avenue, just wish there were better food options. Great community, overall safe, love the HBCU next door (UDC). UDC is a great HBCU and community to be near.
Nice, quiet, and safe with some restaurants in the area. Seems very family friendly and slower paced than downtown. Easy access to grocery stores.
Close to the Zoo and great restaurants. Close enough to Downtown, but far enough away where you're not in the chaos but still in DC.
Pros: safe area (I can let my dog out after midnight and feel safe), <10 min walk to metro, bus stop right outside, grocery store/CVS <10 min walk away (although the giant isn't the greatest), lots of on-street parking available (great for guests),
Cons: not a lot of activities within walking distance
