Hancock
Highly Desirable
North of the University of Texas and close to downtown is surprisingly quaint and quiet Hancock, a neighborhood highly desired by professionals, families, university students and faculty. Many homes adorning the neighborhood were built in the early 1900s, and are charming modestly-sized bungalows. There are also apartment complexes and larger homes. Hancock’s suburban lifestyle and convenient location to many Austin attractions makes it a perfect place to live for residents.
Hancock has plenty of restaurants, shopping, and places to socialize with friends. In the heart of the neighborhood is Hancock Golf Course and Recreation Center, a great place to enjoy the outdoors and warm sunny days. Restaurants and cafes in town include the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Pei Wei, Taco Joint, and Cherrywood Coffeehouse. There are also two convenient grocery stores for residents - H-E-B and Fiesta Market. Hancock is perfect for you if you are looking for a neighborly experience while still being close enough to city life.

If you want to live by the law school and with a bunch of other law students, this is the place to be. I think it makes things really convenient. It is very nice to be so close to an HEB. Additionally, you're across the street from a corner market store. A cool new coffee shop opened up nearby (Progress). So there's good stuff around, but it's not flush with bars or restaurants.

The neighborhood on the west side of Red River is very nice, has a great park and a good place to go for a walk. The east side of Red River can be nice, however you are right up against I-35. This makes it feel slightly less safe and there is more noise/activity.
Overall still a great place to live as a law student, very close to the law school and convenient to getting around town, groceries, restaurants, etc. I think it's still the best area to live in as a law student. Keep reading

Hancock is such a cute, friendly neighborhood. Most of the occupants are young families and students. The housing is pretty mixed, from extremely nice to a little more run-down. I have never had an issue with safety in the neighborhood. The Metro 7 line runs right through Hancock and Hyde Park, making public transit an easy option for getting to school. There is also an HEB grocery store, a running trail/public golf course, and a shopping center right in the neighborhood.

It's a pretty nice walkable area. The roads are busy and the interstate is loud. There are also a decent number of homeless people and bikes get stolen frequently. That said, it's nice to have the golf course nearby as well as cafes, grocery stores and convenience stores.

Very easy to get to campus - long as you are physically able, it is not worth getting a parking pass or driving to campus. It feels safe to walk around during the day-light hours. Grocery store is accessible and it's a heavily residential area.

The neighborhood is close to the law school, but avoids most of the undergraduate crowds. Sometimes it can get a little loud at night, but it’s overall a pretty quiet neighborhood.

The location is fine, about a 12 minute walk to the law school. Close to 35, so you get your share of drifters/vagrants, which leads to a high number of break-ins in the garage.

This location is a bit different than the rest of the neighborhood. The freeway and university are directly east and south of the bungalows, respectively, so it is right in the corner. Most other students live in the large complexes above the hospital or in the various apartments more central and north/west parts of the neighborhood. Therefore, while you can make the effort to go to the other areas, it is out of the way. Overall the area is nice.

This area is relatively quiet, which I love. There isn't really any nightlife nearby (walking distance), but it is easy to get to Rainey or 6th Street as well as many other areas since the building is centrally located. I love the nearby dog park and the ability to walk to and from class at the law school.

It's a great neighborhood to live in. This apartment is on the eastern edge of the neighborhood, but the golf course nearby helps give it a quieter feeling. Best part of this location is its proximity to the law school. It's really close to I-35 though thankfully my apartment is facing the courtyard and I don't hear it. Get used to I-35 as your main highway if you're used to Mopac. Not a lot of great food immediately around, but there's a cornerstore nearby and a smokeshop, Jimmy John's, and a few cafes.
