Amazingly-situated and comfortable apartment

Pros:
* Big windows, lots of sunlight
* A/C and heater are very effective
* Hardwood floors and granite countertops
* Modern kitchen appliances
* Lots of storage space (two closets, tons of cabinets)
* 1-minute walk to 172, 6, and Metra stops
* 5-minute walk from Whole Foods and Marshalls
* Prompt response to maintenance requests
* Friendly neighbors (mostly families, few parties)
* Inexpensive storage units in basement ($10/month)

Cons:
* Slow response times from management; sometimes better to go in-person
* The mail room is in Regents, which experiences delays (but they're installing an Amazon Locker in the Algonquin to mitigate that problem)

Pretty good, but not a great deal for one person

The building is well maintained and no major issues

Great

In front of Regents, so still close to a large law school population.
The gym is only located in one of the Algonquin buildings, and it's really bad.

Algonquin

Cold air comes through the windows, so the apt. doesn’t stay heated.
Management is responsive and nice, but they don’t follow through most of the time.
The first floor always smells like marijuana.
The apartment itself is nice and close to Whole Foods and the bus.

Good apartment, terrible management

The apartment itself is very nice - good location, good appliances and generally well laid out. Unfortunately, the management (MAC Apartments) is so bad that the frustrations of dealing with them outweighs the benefits of the apartment. It took me six months to obtain full access to the building (functional key fob + name in intercom) due to MAC's incompetence and general unresponsiveness. Our building's laundry card machine has been "pending maintenance" for three months. So long as nothing ever goes wrong in the apartment (unlikely, given MAC's track record), it's a nice place, but if something goes wrong, good luck ever getting MAC to respond to it in a timely manner.

Algonquin Review

Algonquin is a really good value for a 1BR that has been renovated within the last 7 years. Mac is kind of annoying to deal with, but you only have so many options in Hyde Park, and it's been a lot better than I was anticipating at the outset. Water is included in rent, and gas (heat) is capped at $40/month, which is really nice in the winter. It's next to the Metra to get downtown, buses to UChicago and downtown, and Lake Shore Drive. It's also close to Regents, which is where a decent amount of law students live, so there's a social group right across the street. Street parking is decently easy if you're not driving somewhere every day and know how to parallel park. Definitely a good building for 1L year.

Apartment Overview

Great if you want to live near Regents but don't want to pay the Regent's price tag. Also has better appliances and higher quality hardware than Regents.

I love living near the university. I think it is very convenient for attending UChicago events. Most of our class lives here, so it makes it very easy for reunions and parties. I take the bus to the loop on the weekends. Living here does not mean you can't experience the loop fun. But people that live in the Loop usually don't come to our class parties because it is far away.
* Very safe; lots of students and families with children and pets
* Many public transit options to the Law School + Loop (the 6, the 28, the 172, the Metra)
* Close to Lake Michigan, great for picnicking, exercising, or sightseeing * Close to 53rd St. strip (restaurants, bars, a hotel, etc.) but still quiet and peaceful
Hyde Park is a great neighborhood, especially for 1L year. There is plenty to do with new bars and restaurants -- and grocery stores, like Trader Joes -- coming in every year. While it's not as "happening" as the Loop or River North, for example, it's nice to be near the Law School as a 1L and most of your classmates will be in Hyde Park as well. I've lived in Hyde Park for 6 years now and can attest that it is very walkable and very safe, and it has a nice neighborhood feel that you don't get as much in the Loop or Loop-adjacent neighborhoods.
Pretty close to campus, about a 10 minute drive/bike ride. Seems safe, at least east of MLK Blvd. Pretty quiet overall, Maple Court is right next to an elementary school so there is some noise in the morning and when the kids are at recess. Hyde Park Produce is walkable, but not super close. Whole Foods is opening up at Lake Park around 51st/Hyde Park Blvd. soon. Large shopping area at 47th and Lake Park with Walgreens and Subway. Mostly fast food on 47th St. No bars, coffee shops, or anywhere nearby to hang out.
Hyde Park is extremely boring. I live here because the school is here and the commute is easy. There are very few good restaurants and no nightlife whatsoever. Luckily, getting downtown is cheap and easy. I've never felt unsafe during the daytime, but I certainly don't go walking around at night.
Everyone in the LL.M program lives in Hyde Park and most of the people live in Regents. You will have an amazing time and the community is perfect. Even if you live alone, you will always have someone to help you with apartment-related problems or just company.
I enjoyed Hyde Park. Although I did try not to walk anywhere at night, I never had an experience that made me uncomfortable. I think Hyde Park has several very good restaurants and fun bars, and it has a nice community feel. I enjoyed living there!
I like Hyde Park. I'm close to everything on 53rd, and most of the time I don't feel unsafe. I'm also close enough to Kenwood that I can walk/run there for a more quiet, less busy experience. Kenwood Park is the best.
