Nice apartments, mediocre amenities and management

Flats has nice apartments, with a few caveats. The interior of the apartments are admittedly VERY nice, and the indoor/key FOB access to all buildings means things are pretty secure + there are no bugs. However, the amenities are comparatively worse than the ones at other apartments in the area. The gym is tiny, esp when you look at Lofts or Trinity. We've also had a persistent problem with noisy neighbors (and Flats floors do not help). Management has been pretty unhelpful with resolving that situation. You wouldn't be wrong to choose Flats, but I'd personally recommend Trinity or Lofts over this apartment complex. Flats is more expensive than both of those complexes and is definitely a worse value than Trinity is.

Pretty good

Apartment and facilities are in great shape - building is just 2-3 years old now I think. Management can be kind of slow to respond to things, but with enough follow up emails they'll get around to whatever you need. Amenities are good (pool and gym), not quite as lavish as some of the other more luxury buildings, but still nice. Also, great location for Duke students with some good restaurants nearby.

Walking distance (15min) from Fuqua; very responsive staff

The Flats is great - super friendly, approachable, and responsible staff. Every work order we've put in has been resolved within a day. Easily accessible to Fuqua - not very many business school students (more med school and others), but convenient and nice.

Gym solid; pool is irrelevant - it exists, but the sun is blocked off and the water is always way too cold.

Pricey but fantastic!

Extremely organized, well-maintained, maintenance is responsive, gym, pool, green with trees, private yet accessible to chipotle and other restaurants, close to Duke. Overall excellent location. Better to have a car while living here. Apartment has nice study rooms. Small sized apartment, sells fast.

Love this apartment & its clean feel/'nature' views - just thin walls

My experience has been great! The apartment is spacious - especially the closet, which I LOVE, and the kitchen storage. The balcony is really nice, I love looking over the trees and pathway that makes me feel more like I'm in nature than I might feel in a different unit or neighboring complex that looks over a parking lot or street. The sunlight is pretty good for being in an apartment. I appreciate being able to park on the same level as my apartment. The pool is nice and though I haven't used the gym here or the study rooms etc. yet they are nice as well. And the management and especially the maintenance is WONDERFUL! They're really responsive and kind. I love living here. With all that said, there is one main drawback - the walls are pretty thin, to the point that I can hear my neighbors' conversations to a point, and the noise of my upstairs neighbors walking around can be pretty loud. But with the niceness of the actual apartment and the proximity to Duke and to highways taking you to downtown Durham or nearby amenities in less than 10 minutes, I'm happy I chose here over the other options.

The Flats at The Exchange on Erwin Review

Overall good, management doesn't really do anything with consistently noisy neighbors despite multiple complaints. Besides that, they're pretty responsive.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
