Crowne on 10th

Crowne on 10th is a great location — it’s close to downtown, the university, and the interstate so you can get anywhere you need to go pretty quickly.

No major problems if your neighbors aren't loud

It's a nice area. Unfortunately my upstairs neighbors are very loud so I've got on my headphones most of the day, but that can be an issue with any apartment. I think the walls may be bit thin. Other issues include random power outages (more a BHAM problem) and cold rooms (due to the set up of my specific apartment no one else has an issue). Also it's a bit expensive if you want to spend less.
Pros include it's a mostly quiet area, lots of space, access to a park, you don't have to pay for parking, and decent amenities. It's a pretty clean area and gated. It's close enough to school that you can bike, walk, or drive.

Great Location Beware of Fees

Crowne on 10th has a great location near Glen Iris. I normally ride my bike to get to Volker, and it takes 7-10 minutes. Unfortunately, the walls are very thin for each apartment. I can usually hear my upstairs neighbor sneeze. This didn't bother me until a bunch of undergraduates moved in around me and would throw parties every Tuesday and Thursday. I would call and complain but the apartment didn't really do anything besides defer to the courtesy officer who would rarely pick up their phone. The pet fees are outrageous, so don't come here if you plan on bringing pets. The maintenance crew is always responsive and will resolve issues within the next day or so. The pest control, building maintenance, and landscaping are always up to date. The apartment has an in-unit washer and dryer. The apartment size is very spacious with a large bathroom, walk-in closet, bedroom, and living room. The AC and heat are excellent and usually heat/cool the entire apartment. The gym is small but the pool is really nice. The apartment complex is gated, and I never had any safety issues living here. For the water bill, Crowne uses a third party company for payment, and they will charge you at least $50/month whether you're using water or not. This is in the contract, and you have to use this terrible company that charges a service fee every time you pay the water bill online. The manager and leasing officer are very nice and try to help you. You are subject to fines if you leave your trash outside, don't clean up after your pet, don't leash your pet outside, and in my case, your pets eat the blinds. Crowne forced me to pay $30 to replace the blinds because it doesn't look good for the apartment even though the blinds are super cheap and can break easily. Last thing, you cannot break your lease no matter what. I, unfortunately, had a terrible roommate and wanted out of the lease; however, you cannot buy yourself out. You can only sublease, so keep this in mind if you plan on living with someone. In conclusion, this place is better than other apartments that I've lived at in Birmingham, but it is not perfect.
