The Shoreland is excellent

The Shoreland is all-around excellent:
1. Location: I'm a UChicago Law student, and it is great to be about a mile from the edge of campus.
2. Transportation: The 171 bus (with several campus stops) comes right to the Shoreland on both weekdays and weekends.
3. Staff: The concierge staff are wonderful, and packages/mail are handled securely, because they staff 24-hours. The maintenance staff are very responsive (within 24 hours) and friendly.
4. Amenities: While the rent is not cheap, it does include most utilities and does make for a very comfortable, operable, and clean living space.
5. Pleasant residents: Fellow residents are generally friendly and responsible. (For those looking for quiet, this is a good place!)

Treated well great building

Have lived in Hyde park for a while and Mac is by and large an awful landlord. However, the Shoreland is an exception. Friendly staff, clean, new, etc.

Good Apartment

I really like this apartment so far! Maintenance has been pretty quick (usually within a day or two), the bus is very convenient, there are lots of students in the buildings, and the apartment itself is nice. On the negative side, the gym is pretty small and the hallways are kind of ugly (yellow walls and old carpet). It also was pretty hot when I moved in -- I don't think the A/C is the best (in my unit at least).

Shoreland

Pros: Convenient door to door transport to and from the law school (171 bus). Great location bc next to promontory point, and pretty decent front desk.
Cons: often hear gunshots and noise from outside, plus gym is subpar.
As someone who valued the safety and transportation factors higher than any others, I am happy with my Shoreland so far.

Shoreland Apartment Experience

I've had a great experience so far living at Shoreland. It's quiet, which is ideal for studying and working at home, yet lots of other students live in the building, so it's very easy to socialize when you want to, especially when the building hosts events in the lobby. Management is very friendly and they always respond quickly to my occasional service requests. I have also only ever found one bug in my apartment in over a year of living here.

Elevator issues April 28, 2024

On Saturday, April 28th, during the afternoon to evening, all the elevators were down for repair for several hours. I want to commend the Receptionist Tiwanna Brown for her professionalism, assistance with directions on how to navigate the stairs, and above all the sincere concern she demostrated towards my family who had arrived from out of town to visit me for my birthday. I am a senior and without Ms. Brown's kindness, not with just me and my family, but with all the other tenants and delivery people who entered The Shoreland only to find the elevators down, the situation would have been unbearable. It was a large responsibility to put on Ms. Brown shoulder of giving attention to each and every need of all, and she definitely moved my anxiety from a 10 (high to a 1 (low). Please thank Ms. Brown for me on behalf of me and all those who were assisted during the evening hours when the unpredictable situation took place. Thank you.

Lessee

This apartment is generally clean and quiet, very comfortable to live. The bus stop is in front of the gate, which is convenient and safe to go to the school. It's also convenient to buy groceries as Trader Joe's is in 15-min walk away.

Hyde Park Reviews

I prioritized living close to the law school in an area with restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores. 5252 offered all these things. I can also easily walk my dogs to the lake from my building.
Comfortable and walkable, decent selection of amenities (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) and close to the lakefront. Not much nightlife
Hyde Park is a fantastic place to live. My girlfriend and I see ourselves staying there for a long time.
Great neighborhood close to the school. Many students live here, which is good for social events.
Hyde Park is a pretty place, very lowkey though. Not much going on (few bars & restaurants). A bit far from other happening neighborhoods in Chicago. There are crime issues (cars broken in, muggings) but not horrible--just have to be vigilant about avoiding risky situations.
Hyde Park is quiet and feels a bit more like a neighborhood, but it is easy to get downtown via the CTA buses or the Metra Electric. The neighborhood itself has some nice cafes and things, but there is less to do outside the school
Hyde Park is the BEST. It's beautiful, active community of people who just really care about the neighborhood. I feel safer living in Hyde Park than any other neighborhood I've lived in Chicago (Lakeview, Logan, Wicker) because the people who live in HP have done so deliberately; they came here either due to the University or simply a desire to live here, which means people say hi on the street, strike up conversations in grocery lines, remember you when you see them at brunch, etc. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to be in the middle of the action (the Loop). I chose HP because I have no patience for the bustle....and because it's way cheaper. My apartment would rent for twice as much if it were near MPP.
I don't get why people dislike Hyde Park so much. Although, to be fair, I do not go out much and when I do, I have a car. But, I really like being able to walk to school everyday rather than have to commute. Plenty of grocery options, especially now that trader joe's is open. Decent number of restaurants around and they're good; nothing spectacular. As for safety, be aware and don't walk by yourself at 2am; use common sense and you'll be fine.
