Great for law students

Overall, really enjoy living in Shoreland - it's my second year here. It's very convenient for law students, given the 171 and other shuttles that run between campus and Shoreland. The building and our apartment are very nice and new. We probably overpay a little, and certainly you can find cheaper apartments in HP, but you're paying for the convenience, better security, etc. than you'd get in a walk-up.

I love being so close to school. The staff is very friendly and the place is always clean. My apartments overlooks the lake and is quite spacious.

Shoreland

Great apartment! A well-managed place with the charm of being a historic building and conveniently newly renovated. Lots of other students live here so it is not uncommon to see friends around common areas or when taking the bus. Amenities are great as well, however if you are wanting a large gym in your apartment complex, this one is small.

Very Convenient Apartment

Shoreland is an extremely convenient place for law students. The shuttle stops right in front, there is an in-unit washer/dryer, and there is central air conditioning. There are better value places in the neighborhood. but Shoreland is worth the premium. Note that the service elevator can only be booked in strict two hour windows, which makes move-in furniture deliveries a challenge.

Review

I enjoy living in Shoreland. There are many other law students that live here, making it especially convenient in the winter months. I love the proximity to the lakefront, that there is a bus stop to the law school in front of the building, and that there is in-unit laundry.

Satisfied for the most part (maybe a little overpriced)

I have had only good interactions with Mac Properties despite hearing the horror stories. Maintenance requests are often filled within a few hours of submission and the staff is wonderful and friendly. Being so close to a 171 bus stop is also great because it basically provides door to door service from Shoreland to the law school.

Clean, new apartment; great folks working in building

I really like living at Shoreland though I will admit the rent feels a bit high for a studio. I appreciate being able to live alone with my cat. The people who work at the front desk and in maintenance are the nicest. The gym is small but good/convenient enough for me. The 171 bus which drops you directly at the law school stops right in front of the building. We are very close to a tunnel that leads to the Lake Shore which is great for running. It also leads directly to Promontory Point where a lot of student orgs host bonfires/events.

Building review

The building is good. It doesn’t provide you with a lot of facilities (just a gym and common areas) but overall is better than other Mac Properties in HP (especially if compared to Regents)

Hyde Park Reviews

I prioritized living close to the law school in an area with restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores. 5252 offered all these things. I can also easily walk my dogs to the lake from my building.
Comfortable and walkable, decent selection of amenities (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) and close to the lakefront. Not much nightlife
Hyde Park is a fantastic place to live. My girlfriend and I see ourselves staying there for a long time.
Great neighborhood close to the school. Many students live here, which is good for social events.
Hyde Park is a pretty place, very lowkey though. Not much going on (few bars & restaurants). A bit far from other happening neighborhoods in Chicago. There are crime issues (cars broken in, muggings) but not horrible--just have to be vigilant about avoiding risky situations.
Hyde Park is quiet and feels a bit more like a neighborhood, but it is easy to get downtown via the CTA buses or the Metra Electric. The neighborhood itself has some nice cafes and things, but there is less to do outside the school
Hyde Park is the BEST. It's beautiful, active community of people who just really care about the neighborhood. I feel safer living in Hyde Park than any other neighborhood I've lived in Chicago (Lakeview, Logan, Wicker) because the people who live in HP have done so deliberately; they came here either due to the University or simply a desire to live here, which means people say hi on the street, strike up conversations in grocery lines, remember you when you see them at brunch, etc. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to be in the middle of the action (the Loop). I chose HP because I have no patience for the bustle....and because it's way cheaper. My apartment would rent for twice as much if it were near MPP.
I don't get why people dislike Hyde Park so much. Although, to be fair, I do not go out much and when I do, I have a car. But, I really like being able to walk to school everyday rather than have to commute. Plenty of grocery options, especially now that trader joe's is open. Decent number of restaurants around and they're good; nothing spectacular. As for safety, be aware and don't walk by yourself at 2am; use common sense and you'll be fine.
