Shoreland - great option

The apartment is right off Lake Michigan with super easy access to The Point and the waterfront trail. There is also a bus stop right out front of the building that can take you to the law school. Getting a parking spot with the building is difficult, but there is tons of free street parking right outside, and a parking lot close by that you can pay for monthly. The overall apartment is very clean and nice. Maintenance has always been quick to respond. I also feel very safe as the front desk is staffed 24 hours a day (which also means your packages never get stolen, and there is an Amazon Hub locker that is very convenient). Overall, it is a great place to live as a 1L.

Generally good, occasionally great

I had some hesitations about renting from Mac after some horror stories were passed along but I am generally pleased with my experience here. The front desk staff are so nice and really try to make the apartment complex feel more welcoming. I appreciate the gym in the building as well! All the maintenance issues I’ve had have been promptly responded to and fixed. Depending on where your unit is, it can be pretty loud with trash and recycling pickup which seems to occur every other day at least, so be cognizant of that (seems worst on the northwest side of the building).

Shoreland for Three Years

I've lived in Shoreland for three years, and I think it's pretty good value for a student. While there are certainly more affordable options in Hyde Park, the amenities, proximity to transit (the 171 bus stops right out front), 24-hour front desk staffing, and proximity to the lake make it a really great place to live. I always feel safe here, and while there are the usual difficulties of living in an apartment building, I would really recommend it for UChicago Law students (especially compared to other options!).

Very comfortable with good amenities

My priority was living in a modern apartment with in-unit washer and dryer. It's been very comfortable. I feel safe and the building staff is friendly and responsive. It's convenient having a small gym in the building and as a runner, I love living right on the lakeshore. It's a nice unit and while expensive, it's at a more affordable price point that some of the high-end luxury apartments in Hyde Park (5252, Solstice, etc.) while being much more modern than most of the walk-ups.

Shoreland is a good choice for law students

Overall good building. A bus stops right in front of Shoreland and the Law School. The bus doesn't come by frequently enough though. Otherwise the location is a bit inconvenient - about 10 mins walk from groceries and 15 mins walk from metra. 6 mins walk to 6 Bus station that can take you downtown.

Seems pricey, but it's worth it; it's good enough

The staff is excellent. Apartments are excellent and updated.

I did quite a bit of searching before settling on Shoreland, and it's true that you're going to be paying ~$400 more per month than you would at most other places in Hyde Park. Plain and simple, what you're paying for is central air conditioning, the in-unit washer and dryer, and door staff. If you are fine with a radiator, window A/C, stairs, and shared laundry room, then save the money and go elsewhere. If you can afford the conveniences, it's worth it.

Great building with amenities in East Hyde Park

Shoreland has a great community feel and is pet friendly (a benefit for both residents with and without dogs). The building has a gym, common areas and a 24-hr front desk attendant. The units are spacious, newly renovated, and complete with in-unit laundry.

In terms of location, Shoreland's close proximity to Lake Shore Drive and Promontory Point are a plus, not to mention the convenience of having the 171 bus stop directly in front of the building. All around, it's a great building -- although more on the expensive side.

Beautiful, well-maintained units & excellent everyday staff

The units in Shoreland are beautiful, clean, renovated, and well-maintained by the building's maintenance team. The building is incredibly convenient for law students. The 171 bus stops in front of the building and at the law school, so even on the coldest winter days you don't have to be outside much. Trader Joe's is about a 10-15 minute walk away, and is also accessible on the 171 bus route. The everyday staff is excellent. The front desk staff are very kind, helpful, and trustworthy with packages. The maintenance team is outstanding - very responsive to maintenance requests. While this certainly isn't the cheapest option in Hyde Park, it's worth it for the quality of the building and amenities.
The management company, MAC, can be challenging to communicate with when it comes to rent renewal. But if you ask to speak to the right people, they will accommodate you. You only need to do this once a year, and it's worth it for the great units.

Hyde Park Reviews

I prioritized living close to the law school in an area with restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores. 5252 offered all these things. I can also easily walk my dogs to the lake from my building.
Comfortable and walkable, decent selection of amenities (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) and close to the lakefront. Not much nightlife
Hyde Park is a fantastic place to live. My girlfriend and I see ourselves staying there for a long time.
Great neighborhood close to the school. Many students live here, which is good for social events.
Hyde Park is a pretty place, very lowkey though. Not much going on (few bars & restaurants). A bit far from other happening neighborhoods in Chicago. There are crime issues (cars broken in, muggings) but not horrible--just have to be vigilant about avoiding risky situations.
Hyde Park is quiet and feels a bit more like a neighborhood, but it is easy to get downtown via the CTA buses or the Metra Electric. The neighborhood itself has some nice cafes and things, but there is less to do outside the school
Hyde Park is the BEST. It's beautiful, active community of people who just really care about the neighborhood. I feel safer living in Hyde Park than any other neighborhood I've lived in Chicago (Lakeview, Logan, Wicker) because the people who live in HP have done so deliberately; they came here either due to the University or simply a desire to live here, which means people say hi on the street, strike up conversations in grocery lines, remember you when you see them at brunch, etc. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to be in the middle of the action (the Loop). I chose HP because I have no patience for the bustle....and because it's way cheaper. My apartment would rent for twice as much if it were near MPP.
I don't get why people dislike Hyde Park so much. Although, to be fair, I do not go out much and when I do, I have a car. But, I really like being able to walk to school everyday rather than have to commute. Plenty of grocery options, especially now that trader joe's is open. Decent number of restaurants around and they're good; nothing spectacular. As for safety, be aware and don't walk by yourself at 2am; use common sense and you'll be fine.
