Wonderful apartments

I really like living in the Shoreland. I think the amenities (particularly in-unit laundry) are great, and I like the social component of there being so many law students in the building. The front desk staff are warm and personable and maintenance has been incredibly prompt whenever I needed them.

Great 1L apartment

Shoreland is a lovely place to live. You're right on the lake, which is great, and most rooms have great views of either the lake or, on the other side, the rest of Hyde Park. The rooms are spacious and recently renovated, and all include washer & dryer and central air/heat. And the (free) 171 bus takes you to the law school in less than 15 minutes. The Mac staff has always been great for me.

Worth the Price

For your first year it really is worth getting a secure and close apartment to introduce you to Hyde Park and the city. The price is definitely higher than the surrounding areas, but very manageable with a roommate and well worth the extra few hundred dollars a month for the simplicity of having a 24/7 front desk, responsive maintenance, and a bus stop right in front of the building.

Fantastic building, but a bit pricey

The building is really nice and management is always very responsive to maintenance requests or other issues. The "gym" in the building only has a few machines and free weights, but it's not too bad for what it is. The 24-hour front desk person/doorman is nice. It's also nice to be able to receive packages. The building is pretty pricey, though. It costs more than I'd like. But it's also nice to have an in-unit washer/dryer and dishwasher. The walls are also pretty thin.

Great location and friendly people

Shoreland rooms have lots of light and have a good layout. The people that work at the front desk are wonderful and service requests are done quickly.

Shoreland

The building staff is all very friendly and helpful, and responds to any problems quickly. I love the neighborhood around shoreland-- it is very quiet and right by a nice lakefront park. The units are nice and updated (in unit laundry is a huge plus) and overall I have no complaints! My rent was raised 2.5% after the first year, which seemed reasonable.

Shoreland

I have very little bad things to say about Shoreland--management is responsive, the location is ideal (CTA picks you up at the building and goes straight to the law school; buses that run downtown are 2 blocks away), the rooms are pretty spacious, and there is someone at the front desk 24/7.

Good place to start.

In unit washer dryer is super convenient, but there’s probably better value somewhere else. Lots of law students live here.

I really like Shoreland

I have a great apartment with a lot of natural light because I'm on the corner. I love having the in-unit washer and dryer, and there's a little over 20 other 1Ls in the building, so there's a good community.

Hyde Park Reviews

I like Hyde Park. I'm close to everything on 53rd, and most of the time I don't feel unsafe. I'm also close enough to Kenwood that I can walk/run there for a more quiet, less busy experience. Kenwood Park is the best.
There's nothing that compares to being in the neighborhood that UChicago is in. Great restaurants and access to the world class lakefront
I like living in Hyde park- it's close to the law school, and I have all the shops and things I need around.
I really enjoy living in Hyde Park. I love how residential and clean it is. It's a great place to go on walks and explore the beautiful historic houses throughout the area. Yet, it still has plenty of restaurants and places to go. It's nice to live in this residential area close to the Law School and still be only a 20-minute uber away from downtown. Safety is something I think about a lot, but this comes with living in any big city. I try to avoid walking alone at night and walk in groups whenever possible. I never have my music blasting. I also carry my pepper spray and keys in my hand at all times when I'm out walking.
Very close to "downtown" Hyde Park so pretty much everything is around you. Transportation to the University of Chicago is also really close by. So are several CTA bus stops and the Metra. There are several restaurants, grocery stores, and shops close by. The building is truly located in a great place.

There have been very few issues with crime and gun violence around the area but like in every major city, being vigilant is important. I have not been too worried about safety but I am careful because things do happen.
Hyde park isn't the most convenient place to live in Chicago, but it is the most convenient place to get to University of Chicago. At times it may not feel like the safest area, but personally I have never experienced any issues. The commute to school is pretty easy, give or take the accuracy of the bus times.
It's got everything you need. Biggest thing is obviously the proximity to campus.
I love living in Hyde Park, you can view lots of beautiful scenery and easily access to the Loop area for entertainment.
Though Hyde Park is safer area compared to the nearby, needless to say, you should be careful not to walk alone in the nighttime.
