Great place to live if you're less social

My apartment is completely beautiful: crown molding, spacious, uninterrupted lake view from all rooms. The drawback is, of course, that it's not in the Loop with other Boothies. I recommend East Park Tower if you need your space from all the social action. You also need to have some money set aside each month for late night Uber rides from the Loop.

Mac Property Review

The water sometimes shuts off during the middle of the night. This has happened several times. The staff does not give consistent answers to questions and it is unclear what the policy is regarding certain things. It is hard to reach the management staff at times.

East Park Tower

Not great, but not bad. Not as modern as Regents or Shoreland, but quiet and great location on 53rd. MAC Management (so not good), but the maintenance guys on-site are very friendly and respond quickly.

MAC is awful

Scheduled and unscheduled water shut offs happen frequently, requiring us to call services at 9pm to ask them to fix the pipes. Extensive water damage required constructing an entire wall, which was two days of work. MAC also got rid of the doorman at the front with no notice, despite advertising it as one of the perks of the building. Shower water temperature is not consistent--it runs from hot to cold though the knobs are not touched. Maintenance requests require days to fix. Overall, the worst apartment I have ever lived in.

A decent building with bad management

The unfortunate reality of housing in Hyde Park is that MAC Properties manages most of the buildings. In itself, East Park Tower is not a bad building. Although it is a little old, it is renovated and is in a great location close to public transit. However, MAC Properties ruins the experience.
When I rented my apartment, we were promised there would be someone to receive our packages and watch the doors. Six months into my lease, the woman who received our packages was gone and now we have to pick up all of our packages across the street in the Del Prado. We were given no notice of this change, and only received an email about it weeks later. As a result, every time I want to pick up a package I have to go across the street and wait for someone to let me in, since MAC refuses to give me entrance to the Del Prado building. I can't believe this is due to safety concerns since they do not even think it's important to have someone watch the door in my building anymore.
Furthermore, I understand that East Park Tower is an older building, so there must be issues with the plumbing, etc. However, there is always one day notice for when the water is shut off, and the hours are usually from 8am-5pm. Essentially, you have an entire day without water. In the last month, the water was shut off three times. If MAC managed itself properly, it would give us better notice and limit the times without water to only a few hours. Instead, we always just find a piece of paper taped to the elevator telling us there is no water the next day. In addition, parts of the building are just not renovated properly. In my renovated apartment, a lot of my windows are duct-taped shut to keep cold air from coming in. There was no insulation installed around the windows when they were put in, so during the winter I have to move my furniture away from the windows to keep from having cold air blow at my back when I watch TV.
I will also note that since East Park Tower is undergoing a renovation, there is constantly construction. Many mornings I wake up to the sound of hammering, and it lasts throughout the day. Once a room is done being renovated, another room will start with more hammering. Just another thing for people to consider when looking at this building.
The only good thing about East Park Tower is its location and maintenance workers. All of the maintenance guys are extremely friendly and willing to help you if you run into them in the hallway. They are the best experience I've had in this building.

5242 S Hyde Park (East Park Tower)

I love my apartment and my building. The location is perfect, bus stop across the street gets me to school or downtown quickly. There is no doorman but because of that the price is a lot lower than the other high-rises in the area. If you can get a recently renovated unit, its a steal. Gym on first floor and laundry on each floor. Don't want to leave!

East Park Tower

Not a fancy apartment, but updated appliances and renovated bathrooms. The building is generally pretty quiet; more working people than students and if students, it tends to be older ones (not undergrads). There unfortunately isn't a doorman anymore and the building shares management with Del Prado across the street (large packages are also delivered to Del Prado for pickup), but the building hasn't had safety issues and is right across from the park, which is very nice. The building has central heating via radiators, and there's been some plumbing problems this year, which they've been spending a lot of time trying to fix, but the maintenance guys are wonderful. The location is really good though; on 53rd St where most of the restaurants are and between the two main buildings where other law students live (Regents and Shoreland).

I like Hyde Park. I'm close to everything on 53rd, and most of the time I don't feel unsafe. I'm also close enough to Kenwood that I can walk/run there for a more quiet, less busy experience. Kenwood Park is the best.
There's nothing that compares to being in the neighborhood that UChicago is in. Great restaurants and access to the world class lakefront
I like living in Hyde park- it's close to the law school, and I have all the shops and things I need around.
I really enjoy living in Hyde Park. I love how residential and clean it is. It's a great place to go on walks and explore the beautiful historic houses throughout the area. Yet, it still has plenty of restaurants and places to go. It's nice to live in this residential area close to the Law School and still be only a 20-minute uber away from downtown. Safety is something I think about a lot, but this comes with living in any big city. I try to avoid walking alone at night and walk in groups whenever possible. I never have my music blasting. I also carry my pepper spray and keys in my hand at all times when I'm out walking.
Very close to "downtown" Hyde Park so pretty much everything is around you. Transportation to the University of Chicago is also really close by. So are several CTA bus stops and the Metra. There are several restaurants, grocery stores, and shops close by. The building is truly located in a great place.

There have been very few issues with crime and gun violence around the area but like in every major city, being vigilant is important. I have not been too worried about safety but I am careful because things do happen.
Hyde park isn't the most convenient place to live in Chicago, but it is the most convenient place to get to University of Chicago. At times it may not feel like the safest area, but personally I have never experienced any issues. The commute to school is pretty easy, give or take the accuracy of the bus times.
It's got everything you need. Biggest thing is obviously the proximity to campus.
I love living in Hyde Park, you can view lots of beautiful scenery and easily access to the Loop area for entertainment.
Though Hyde Park is safer area compared to the nearby, needless to say, you should be careful not to walk alone in the nighttime.
