Nuevo west | decent but could be better
the apartment is decent, clean. but hdh won't respond to fix-it requests. kinda expensive, being a student so much rent can be unoaffordable. otherwise okay

Mesa Nueva is good and close to campus, but it has annoying restrictions
I live in UCSD graduate housing in Mesa Nueva. Overall, Mesa Nueva is good. All basics are pretty good, maintenance is fairly responsive, internet service is great (although it's a weird VLAN setup, so no way to enable port forwarding to your network), and it's close to campus. However, you can't have pets, you can't use nails on the walls for decorations, cabinet space in the kitchen is limited and you can't, again, attach anything to the walls using nails/screws to make more room. Prices have skyrocketed for new students (I think my unit would go for $2800 now!), but sadly, even these new prices are probably cheaper than anything in the surrounding area.
In terms of space, bathrooms are gigantic, sacrificing space in the actual rooms for no good reason. There is no storage space to speak of, and closets are fairly small (well, the master bedroom has a walking closet with a bit more room, average I'd say). Living room is pretty good in size, and the kitchen is decent (there isn't a lot of cabinet space, though). There are in-unit washer and dryer in my apartment, and they are pretty new and pretty great! There isn't central air in the unit, relying solely on fans and electric heaters in the winter (I've never needed to turn on the heaters for the past 2 winters).
Mesa Nueva is close to campus, around a 20 minute walk. The new trolley line has finally opened (also a 15 minute walk from Mesa Nueva), which provides easier access to downtown San Diego from campus (parking in downtown San Diego is either expensive or hard to find). There is a(n open) mall within walking distance as well.
Biggest downside for most students is that they can only remain in grad housing for two years (unless they have SHORE which guarantees housing for 6 years at most). Otherwise, it's a good enough place for grad students to live in.

Mesa Neuva
Overall, it's good, but the ventilation and sound insulation are not very good. Living directly above the swimming pool is sometimes noisy. The indoor temperature is too high in summer.

Highly Recommend Grad Housing
I highly enjoyed living at the grad housing. It was convenient to get to campus, you're surrounded by other students and the rent is great. Apartments are modern and comfortable.

Mesa Nueva is pretty good as long as you're currently living here
Graduate housing is a very good deal if you already live here. The location is close to campus and the apartments, while a little small, are decently sized. The rent was much cheaper than the surrounding area but there was a major price increase on Oct. 1st. Now the rent price is on par with the surrounding area. The only benefit this complex has is its closeness to campus and the community of grad students if you are a new resident.

Grad housing
This housing is more than adequate, although sparsely furnished (e.g. no bins in the bathrooms or bedrooms) and with very little cupboard space. I would be quite happy with it except that there is a 2 year limit so that I will have to find somewhere else to live which is a pain.

Good Value
The apartment has everything I need and is reasonably priced when living with a partner. Great shared public spaces and amenities. Management is promptly responsive to maintenance requests and questions.
