Decent place

It’s a decent place but there are nicer apts around with better amenities. The location can’t be beat tho with Publix and so many restaurants right across the street.

Why I moved out

I lived there 2022-2023. My first sign should’ve been management blowing us off when we arrived to pick up information about the apartment. But we overlooked it because the location to campus and the price was a good deal. Fast forward, management lost my deposit and accused me of never paying them. They wouldn’t respond to email proof until I walked down to the office with the physical reciept. Then all of a sudden they were accommodating. I tried to steer clear of the office after that until around Christmas when my package was stolen (brand new otoscope $$). They provide no help whatsoever. In fact, they had found evidence of package theft within the building but did not alert the victims or make any changes. Their sorry excuse was I should’ve instructed the delivery to the office rather than the lockers— despite repeated notices that they do not accept packages at the office and will direct them to outside the package lockers. So obviously management was incompetent at the time but somehow it got worse. Multiple months after I had moved out and lease expired, they tried to charge me thousands of back rent. They had failed to “remember” the email notices, resident portal form, and physical key drop off w conversations that said we did not renew these and relinquish the apartment. It took three lengthy conversations (2 phone, 1 in-person w evidence) for them to “remember” and clear the charges. So yeah… there was also a period without janitorial staff that caused urine to accumulate in halls and green spaces since residence would allow their dogs to pee wherever. And the gate to the parking deck was broken the majority of the time.

But since my time there they’ve gotten new management (again). I have friends that continue to live there and agree management has improved (but still not superb). It really comes down to if the price is right to accept the caveats. It’s convenient for preclinicals and Birmingham campus clinicals. Probably the cheapest of the downtown apartment buildings— for a reason.

Good apartment complex!

We've had to get some minor repairs during the first 4-5 months of living here, but overall the unit is nice. I didn't give it a 10/10 because the staff can be difficult to get in touch with over the phone, and there is only one option for internet/cable (AT&T). It can also be a bit noisy at times (upstairs neighbors are loud), but that can happen at any apartment complex. I think the location and overall quality of the apartment make it worth it.

Some big pros to the complex are the gated parking garage, apartment gym, and mail lockers. I feel pretty safe, especially for being downtown. There's also a Publix, Starbucks, and Chipotle conveniently located 1-2 blocks away.

Construction noise

I enjoy living downtown and being within walking distance from campus, but a new construction project just began across from the apartment complex that makes it hard to focus in the apartment.

Southside Station

This is a very spacious 1b/1b apartment. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to Volker and has three restaurants below, with six more restaurants, Publix, and Chipotle one block away. Susan Quinn is the property manager and she is very attentive to all the needs of the residents. There are quite a few homeless that sleep in this area, but other than that I have no complaints.

Living Alone Near the Hospital

Southside station was fine. The apartments are on the older side and it isn't the friendliest area of town, but the management was pretty hands-on (sometimes too much). The apartments had some dumb easy stuff to fix but never were like drawers that wouldn't close right or a sliding door that was messed up. They got mad at me when a bird decided to attack the window screen as if I had something to do with it. There was one time they almost towed my car despite living there for over a year and having the same car with the same parking sticker. The parking is amazing though to be honest and is definitely the best selling point. It sits above restaurants so my 2nd floor apartment was really hot in the summer because of the kitchens. 3rd and 4th floor apartments shake a lot when helicopters fly overhead (3-4 times a day). Super convenient for medical school or hospital employees.

Safe and quick maintenance

Very safe apartment with an on-call security officer. Quiet, mostly family and young professionals. All maintenance is on-site so you only have to wait an hour when you have a maintenance problem. They have an on-call security officer for emergencies and noise complaints.
